SamMobile Daily Recap: September 11, 2017 — Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 and more!

PSA: Galaxy Note 8 comes with Samsung’s coveted Dual Messenger feature

Samsung has brought its Dual Messenger feature, which clones messaging applications—like Snapchat and WhatsApp—in a sandboxed environment, allowing users to sign into more than one account, to the Galaxy Note 8, following its debut on the Galaxy A (2017) and Galaxy J (2017) series earlier this year.

As we mentioned in our initial coverage, applications that natively support more than one account—Instagram and Twitter, for example—won’t show up in the Dual Messenger configuration panel, but just about every platform that doesn’t will. We tried it with WhatsApp, and it works surprisingly well.

Once you’ve set up the feature by opening up Settings, selecting Advanced Features, tapping Dual Messenger and running through the set-up process, you’ll notice two versions of the application on your home screen: the regular one and the cloned version, indicated by a small chain icon in the bottom-right corner.

Switching between them is seamless and because they’re technically different applications, they can be used at the same time in Multi Window. Don’t expect them to slouch when they’re running simultaneously, either. Messages are delivered in real-time, as are read receipts and notifications.

Unfortunately, Dual Messenger is still yet to make its way to the Galaxy S8, but that doesn’t mean owners can’t replicate the feature. The handset’s Secure Folder can also create a sandboxed environment, in which applications can be cloned; however, they’ll need to authenticate themselves whenever they want to access them.

Dual Messenger essentially eliminates the need to open up Secure Folder and provide a password whenever you want to use another account.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) starts receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update in India

After rolling out the Nougat update to the Galaxy A7 (2017) yesterday in India, Samsung has done the same for the Galaxy A5 (2017) earlier today. The phone was launched earlier this year with Android 6.0 onboard.

The update, which is rolling out in India for the Galaxy A5 (2017), has a file size of 1385.98MB and firmware version A520FXXUBQI5. It’s an OTA update that brings Android 7.0 to the smartphone along with a new user interface design and user experience as well as features like Dual Messenger and Samsung Pass.

The Nougat update also brings improvements to Always On Display, multi-window, notifications, and quick setting toggles. As always, the update brings bug fixes and stability improvements to the smartphone. If you’re from India, have you received this update on your Galaxy A5 (2017)?

[Poll] Should your handset switch to the iris scanner when face recognition doesn’t work?

If your authentication method of choice on your Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ is face recognition, I’m sure you’ve been left feeling frustrated when it’s too dark to recognize your face, forcing you to either enter a password or use the inconveniently-positioned fingerprint reader.

This got us thinking… Why doesn’t face recognition automatically switch to the iris scanner, which utilizes infrared to work at night, when it’s too dark to detect a face? It’s a lot more convenient than stretching to reach the fingerprint scanner—and not to mention more intuitive.

Samsung’s Q3 2017 earnings may beat expectations

It has a very good year for Samsung in terms of financials, especially after what happened last year with the Galaxy Note 7 and its heir apparent’s arrest on bribery charges earlier this year. The company leapfrogged Apple last quarter in terms of earnings, and it is now being reporeted that the company’s Q3 2017 earnings may beat market expectations and post earnings growth.

Industry insiders had said earlier that Samsung could experience almost no growth this quarter since it achieved unprecedented results in the last quarter with an operating profit of KRW 61 trillion (about $12.38 billion). Even Samsung had said that its earnings could fall in the following three months. However, industry trackers have now started predicting that earnings may top initial estimates due to sales of OLED screens to Apple for the iPhone 8, which is expected to be unveiled tomorrow.

Kim Sun-woo, an analyst with Meritz Securities, said that Samsung’s sales could reach KRW 64.84 trillion and an operating profit of KRW 14.34 trillion for Q3 2017. “Samsung’s cautious guidance report reflects underlying uncertainties in the market, yet strong demand in computer chips and stable profits being generated in the smartphone market are bolstering expectations,” Kim said. This view was echoes by eBest Investment Securities Co.

The reasons provided by eBest Investment Securities Co.’s market expert Eo Kyu-jin were higher pries of RAM and NAND flash chips. Samsung just received record pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8 in the US.

Samsung Pay updated with support for three new banks in Russia

Samsung Pay has received a much-requested update in Russia. The upgrade transports compatibility for Soyuz, GPB and SKB debit cards, which are all issued by MasterCard, as well as a number of miscellaneous bug fixes and stability improvements.

It’s worth noting, however, that it could take a few days for the update to reach your handset, but as soon as it does, you’ll be able to activate Samsung Pay in order to start making mobile payments in brick-and-mortar (and online) stores.

Russia was the ninth country that Samsung Pay reached following its debut in South Korea back in August 2015. When it launched, a total of five banks were supported: Alfa-Bank, VTB24, MTS Bank, Raiffeisen Bank and Russian Standard Bank.

Samsung Pay is available on a whole host of devices, including the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6, though support varies region by region. In India, for example, it’s available on a selection of mid-range smartphones.
