Daily Deal: Take 38% off Samsung’s Wireless Charging Pad

Amazon’s slashed 38% off the price of Samsung’s first-generation Wireless Charging Pad, so you can currently pick one up for just $24.99. If that’s not enough to sway your hand, knowing the promotion is available worldwide should be, as you can bag yourself one for the discounted price even if you don’t live in the US.

To complete your purchase, press the Buy Now button below. It would probably be wise to hurry though, as the limited inventory Amazon has probably won’t be around for too long. If you miss out on this particular offer, don’t worry. Be sure to check back on Wednesday for another chance to pick up some tech on the cheap.

Lee Jae-yong will likely be notified as the Samsung Group Head in April 2018

Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee is the head of the conglomerate in name only. He suffered a heart attack in May 2014 and has been under medical care ever since. His son, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, has been running the conglomerate since then. However, he has never been formally designated as the Samsung Group Head. That might change in April next year.

The Fair Trade Commission of South Korea has pointed out that Lee Kun-hee remains the chairman of the Samsung Group even though he hasn’t been able to conduct management activities for over three years now.

Samsung Group Head

The FTC has now decided to devise improvement measures to designate persons as heads of Korean conglomerates. The purpose behind this is to reflect reality and adherence to the relevant laws.

The Fair Trade Act explains that the head of a business group is a person who controls it. There’s no separate qualification requirement in the act for an individual to become eligible for the position.

An amendment has now been proposed to the Fair Trade Act in the country’s National Assembly. The amendment seeks to block those who are neither sensible nor able to conduct economic activities independently from becoming heads of business groups.

“We have not yet determined whether to restrict business group heads’ qualifications through an amendment to the Fair Trade Act or other ways,” said an FTC official. It’s planning to finalize this before April when it’s due to issue the list of large enterprises in the country.

It’s now expected that before that list is released in April, the Samsung Group head will be changed from chairman Lee Kun-hee to vice chairman Lee Jae-yong.

Samsung teams up with Insight to provide Smart TV owners with more UHD content

Samsung has teamed up with Insight TV to provide TV Plus viewers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK with up to 500 hours’ worth of Insight’s original UHD content, featuring entertainment and lifestyle programming, from early 2018.

This news comes less than 24-hours after Insight announced that its catalogue of content, which includes shows such as Access all Areas, King of the Hammers, Masters of Dirt, Thru and MTB Heroes, will soon be available on Amazon Channels.

TV Plus is Samsung’s on-demand streaming platform

Launched back in Europe back in August, TV Plus is an on-demand platform Samsung developed to provide owners of its Smart TVs in the aforementioned regions with a selection of UHD content to view whenever they please.

“Our goal at Samsung is to create innovative and valuable technology that makes our consumers’ lives easier and more enjoyable when it comes to watching their favorite content,” said Heeman Lee, VP of Visual Display at Samsung.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ top US consumer review

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have topped the list of the best-performing smartphones in the United States, with the Galaxy S7 coming in a close third, beating the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus—which ranked fifth and fourth, respectively—according to a review conducted by Consumer Reports.

It’s not all good news for Samsung, though. While the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy S7 dominated the top three places, the recently-released Galaxy Note 8 ranked sixth. Consumer Reports believes that weak durability and a heavy build were the main reasons it wasn’t awarded a higher position.

Galaxy S7 took home third place

We’re stunned that the Galaxy S7 took home third place. Released back in 2016, the handset sports relatively modest specifications by today’s standards, but a solid design, coupled with continued software updates, have made it a go-to smartphone for customers who aren’t after the latest and greatest internals.

To clarify: that doesn’t mean it’s old hat. It’s still a fantastic smartphone, albeit not one that’s able to compete with the likes of the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 on paper. In the real world, however, it’s able to battle with the titans—and to have a smartphone continue to do that a year after it’s release is quite the achievement.

Never lose your keys again with Samsung’s brand new Connect Tag

Samsung has today taken the wraps of Connect Tag, a simple way to keep track of loved ones and valuables. The Connect Tag, which is the world’s first consumer mobile product to use narrowband network technology, uses low-power networks to send GPS readings back to your smartphone—so if you happen to lose your keys, for example, you’ll be able to find them within a matter of seconds.

Best of all, the Connect Tag is integrated into the firm’s SmartThings ecosystem, working in unison with your smart home appliances. What this means is that it can adopt the role of an NFC chip; you can configure it to turn on/off the lights when you walk past them at predetermined times of the day or—and this one’s my personal favourite—set it to disable the air conditioning when you leave the room.

“Connect Tag features a compact size, measuring just 4.21 centimeters wide and 1.19 centimeters thick, as well as IP68 water and dustproof rating for durability,” says Samsung. “The battery can last for up to seven days on a single charge, minimizing the need to constantly swap out or plug in the device. Connect Tag comes with an exclusive ring that easily attaches to bags, collars or key rings.”

The technology will be showcased at the Samsung Developer Conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California on October 18 through October 19. It will be available to purchase starting in the firm’s home country, South Korea, before expanding to select countries, which likely include the United Kingdom and the United States, in the coming months.
