New Galaxy S10 render highlights display hole and triple rear camera

A new Galaxy S10 render has surfaced courtesy of a case manufacturer. It highlights the much talked about display hole and the triple rear camera. Samsung will reportedly be offering as many as four variants of the Galaxy S10.

There’s a new entry-level model which will presumably come with a flat display. The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ will feature curved displays as well as triple and quad rear cameras. Samsung also has a model with six cameras in total and 5G support.

Latest Galaxy S10 render comes from a case maker

We have already seen renders of the Galaxy S10+. They showed off the quad camera at the back and the dual front camera with the requisite display hole. The one similarity between all models is said to be the Infinity-O display. It’s a new kind of display which has a hole in the actual display area for the front camera. The shape will be slightly different for the Galaxy S10+ since it will have two cameras on the front.

The Galaxy S10 won’t be Samsung’s first device with an Infinity-O display, though. The company is unveiling the Galaxy A8s later today. It also has a cutout in the display for the front camera. So we’ll be able to get the first impressions of the Infinity-O display even before the Galaxy S10 is unveiled.

This render also envisages a camera cutout in the top right corner of the display. It suggests that this will enable the device to have extremely slim bezels, something that many customers might appreciate. The rear triple camera system is laid out horizontally as expected. What the render shows here is in line with the expectations that have been formed so far about the Galaxy S10.

Whether or not it will look entirely like this remains to be seen. What’s your opinion on how the Galaxy S10 design is shaping up? Let us know in the comments below.

Galaxy S10+ prototype with dual front cameras, corner notch spotted

2019 is fast approaching, and so is the tenth anniversary of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S lineup. The Galaxy S10 has a lot of expectations riding on it, but at least one area where it is sure to disappoint is the display. Many of us had been hoping the Galaxy S10 will show the world that you can get rid of bezels without bringing in a notch, which probably isn’t going to happen. And to further dash our hopes, what is apparently a Galaxy S10+ prototype has been spotted with a corner notch.

The device pictured here is clearly masked by an opaque outer shell, like most prototypes/developer devices usually are. It’s similar to the 5G-enabled prototype Samsung had on display at Qualcomm’s Tech Summit in Hawaii, but you can see two camera sensors in the notch this time around. It’s also easy to spot the noticeably smaller bezels at the top and bottom and that new earpiece design that Samsung has finally brought to its smartphone lineup. Sadly, another leak over the weekend had suggested the possibility of the Galaxy S10 having centered camera holes, so it’s unclear at this point exactly what design the company is going for.

A leak showing Galaxy S10 screen protectors had indicated that the corner notch is the final design, but we know better than to believe any of these leaks and rumors without a healthy dose of skepticism. Samsung is readying four Galaxy S10 variants, none of which seem to have that New Infinity display that the company had introduced at its developer conference in early November. But the Galaxy S10 is still nearly three months away, so things may change in the coming weeks.

Check out the picture above and let us know what you think!

One UI (Android Pie) feature focus: Reset volume and screen brightness

Have you ever gone into the display settings of your Galaxy smartphone to temporarily increase the screen timeout duration, only to forget resetting it back to normal? Increased screen brightness for a particular situation and left it there, allowing the display to use up precious battery life? Or wished the phone’s speakers would stop blasting out at full volume in a crowded place or late in the night? If the answer is yes, then you will like a new feature in Android Pie and One UI.

An option called Optimize settings can be found in advanced battery settings on Pie. When enabled, it can automatically reset screen brightness, screen timeout duration, and media volume to a customizable preset value. The adjustment is made at midnight each day if you’re not using the phone at the time, and you can also individually control which of the three settings are automatically reset. It’s a simple yet clever feature that only Samsung can think of with its kitchen sink approach to smartphone functionality.

Using the Android Pie beta? To find the Optimize settings option, open the phone’s Settings app, tap Device care, then tap the Battery option to go into the battery menu. Here, tap the three-dot button at the top right of the screen and click on the Settings option.

Render shows Galaxy S10 with centered display holes, because why not

There isn’t a lot of clarity about the Galaxy S10’s display at this point. Some rumors suggest that at least one model might have an Infinity-O display. Others claim all Galaxy S10 models will have a display hole for the front camera. The renders that have surfaced over the past week subscribe to the latter.

A new render detailing a case manufacturer’s expectation for the Galaxy S10 has now surfaced online. It does feature the display holes but they’re centered. This is the first time this has been expected for the Galaxy S10. All other reports and renders put the display holes in the top right corner.

First render to envisage the Galaxy S10 with centered display holes

This case manufacturer’s expectation only differs in placement as it also claims that the Galaxy S10+ will have a dual front camera. The other two models will have single front cameras and thus a single display hole.

The centered display holes mean that the screen can flow above them. One can presume that they would blend in nicely with the black status bar. To some, it might feel like this is a mini notch since it’s not as big an obstruction. This will likely appeal to those who appreciate symmetry as well.

Whether or not this is what Samsung ends up doing remains to be seen. This render is based on a case manufacturer’s expectations for the Galaxy S10 lineup. While they often have some information about an upcoming device’s design ahead of time, they’re not always fully informed.

So take this with a healthy dose of salt until there’s more to go on. We have already asked you if you’d prefer a notch or display holes on the Galaxy S10. Now the question is whether you’d prefer the centered display holes or not? Do let us know in your comments below.

Slots for Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie beta program are still available!

It has been three days or so since Samsung started the Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie beta program in Germany, India, and the US, but it seems like people aren’t in a rush to try it out. It’s not completely surprising, as most people wouldn’t want to install beta software on their only smartphone. But if you have a Galaxy Note 9 and have been wondering if you can still register, then you are in luck.

Galaxy Note 9 Pie beta slots not filled up just yet

We have tried on German and Indian models of the Galaxy Note 9, and the option to register for the beta program still works. It’s possible a few slots were freed up because of some users opting out of the beta, or maybe it’s just the fact that people aren’t too interested in major updates anymore. In any case, Galaxy Note 9 owners in India and Germany can still access the beta program. If you have a Note 9 and live stateside, feel free to check the Samsung+ app and let us know if registration is still possible in the US.

To register for the Android Pie and One UI beta program, open the Samsung Members app on your Note 9, go into the Notices section, tap the notice about the Galaxy Note 9 Pie beta program, then tap on the banner that shows up on the screen. Then, tap the Registration/Register button at the bottom of the screen and accept the terms and conditions to get into the program. You can then download the Pie beta by hitting the Download updates manually option in the Software update menu of the phone’s settings.

Have you managed to register for the Galaxy Note 9 beta program?

Samsung Soundcamp app to be discontinued at the end of December

It looks like Samsung’s music composing app, Soundcamp, didn’t take off as the company would have wanted. The app will be discontinued at the end of this month. The Samsung Soundcamp Team announced the bad news through the listing for the app on Google Play and the Galaxy Apps store. The app also greets you with the same message every time you launch it on your phone.

Samsung discontinuing Soundcamp

As of December 28, 2018, the Samsung Soundcamp app will no longer be available to download from Google Play and Galaxy Apps. Although you can still use the Soundcamp app, add-ons and contents already downloaded on your phone after the service has been canned, it will not be available if you replace your Android device. Also, your device will no longer support the app after an OS update (for example, it doesn’t work on the Android Pie beta). Soundcamp is currently available for Samsung devices running Android 5.1 or higher.

If you’re an existing Soundcamp user, Samsung advises you to backup the your data to avoid any potential loss. To do so, launch the Soundcamp app and go to the Project menu. You’ll find all of your projects listed there. Tap the project you want to create a backup for, tap more (three vertical dots on the top right of the screen). Now select Export, mark the tracks you want to save and tap Export. Choose the output file type and save the file. The saved files will be in the Soundcamp folder in the internal storage of your device.

Samsung Soundcamp has been quite popular among music lovers and this decision by Samsung will certainly disappoint many. Whether the company has something better in the works remains to be seen.

Do you use Samsung Soundcamp? How do you feel about Samsung discontinuing the service?
