Galaxy Note 9 owners on Oreo can now update to Android Pie in Germany

Samsung finally released the Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update for users on Android Oreo (those who didn’t take part in the Pie beta program), starting with the UAE and some neighboring countries. While it’s unclear if this will be the beginning of a wider rollout, Samsung has just extended availability of the update to non-beta users in Germany. The update is now available for download over the air.

Worldwide rollout incoming?

Germany was the first market where Samsung released the Note 9 Pie update, but until today, it was only for beta participants. Again, it remains to be seen if the worldwide rollout will be here soon. Samsung Turkey, for example, is now saying the Note 9 will get Pie on February 1 while it had earlier said the update would be out by January 15. We never expected Samsung to release the update everywhere before the end of January, but it would be disappointing if some countries have to wait until February or March even for unlocked units.

If you own a Galaxy Note 9, open the Settings app, tap Software update, then tap the Download updates manually option. The update is almost 1.6GB in size (with software version N960FXXU2CSA2), so make sure to use a Wi-Fi network or a data plan with enough bandwidth before starting the download. We’ll update our readers once the Android Pie firmware start showing up on our firmware database.

Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update for non-beta users rolling out in the UAE

It was a week ago that Samsung released the stable Galaxy Note Android Pie update for beta users in Germany, and a second update was released just yesterday in the country. And the company is finally beginning the general rollout of Android Pie for those on Android Oreo. The update is rolling out in the UAE and comes with software version N960FXXU2CSA2, the same as the second update that arrived in Germany yesterday.

At the moment, the update seems to be available only over the air, but it should only be a matter of time before it hits Samsung Smart Switch and our own firmware section. If you own a Galaxy Note 9 and reside in the UAE, you can check if the update is available by going into the Settings » Software update menu and tapping the Download updates manually option. We’ll keep an eye on things in the next few hours to see if the update starts rolling out in other countries, so be sure to check back later.

Entry-level Galaxy S10 could still be launched as the Galaxy S10 Lite

Samsung may stick to using the Lite moniker for the entry-level Galaxy S10, according to a new report. It was recently suggested by retailer Mobile Fun that the base model would be called Galaxy S10 E and not Galaxy S10 Lite, but the folks over at CompareRaja cite their source as saying that Samsung is going to use the latter for the retail device.

Lite vs E: The former sounds better for a flat-screen device

To be fair, Lite would make more sense. If rumors of the 5.8-inch entry-level Galaxy S10 having a flat display are true, many might equate the E in Galaxy S10 E with the word economy instead of Edge, and that’s not something Samsung would want. The report also reiterates claims that the S10 Lite will miss on an in-display fingerprint sensor, making one wonder just what kind of security features the base model will offer. An iris sensor isn’t going to be there thanks to the lower bezels, and despite some hints in Samsung’s Android Pie firmware, it’s still a bit doubtful that the Galaxy S10 will get 3D facial recognition.

The other details mentioned in the report seem to echo what has been leaked in recent weeks, such as the fact that only the Lite model will be offered in yellow, something we exclusively revealed last month, and the battery sizes for the three variants. It should only be a matter of time before we get to see how much of the leaks and rumors is true, as we’re just a little over a month away from the official Galaxy S10 launch.

Galaxy Note 9 getting a second stable Android Pie update in Germany!

Could Samsung finally be getting ready to release the Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update to more than just one country? Well, it depends on how optimistic you are. Samsung has just released a second stable Pie update for the Galaxy Note 9 in Germany, and it could be the version that will be released for other countries in the coming days. Again, it all depends on how optimistic you are but it’s best to keep a lid on your expectations even though Samsung also published the Note 9 Android Pie user manual earlier today.

The new update comes with software version N960FXXU2CSA2, with a generic changelog that also accompanied the first update. Since it’s not a beta, we can’t expect a proper changelog in the Samsung Members app, either, so it’s unclear what improvements or changes it brings. We can hope that it adds some of the missing features on the first Android Pie release, such as a schedule option for Night mode and the ability to record videos in the camera’s Pro mode.

Of course, if you get the update on your Note 9 in Germany, you can check and tell us in the comments whether those features have been added or not. You can download the 130 MB update from the Software update menu in the Settings app by tapping the Download and install option. Latest Galaxy Xcover 4 firmware update brings the January security patch

The latest Galaxy Xcover 4 firmware update that Samsung is rolling out today brings the January 2019 security patch. The device is often quick to receive new patches and in some instances, it has even received the patches before Samsung details them. We don’t have to look too far either for evidence. It received the December 2018 security patch before Samsung officially detailed it.

Samsung started rolling out the January 2019 security patch only a few days ago. The patch has made it to a couple of handsets so the Galaxy Xcover 4 is still getting it before even the flagships.

Galaxy Xcover 4 firmware update

Samsung is rolling out firmware version G390FXXU3BSA2 for the Galaxy Xcover 4 in Turkey. It brings the security patch for the month of January 2019. The update may not bring much in the way of new features for this device. It’s a minor release meant to address the vulnerabilities present in Android and Samsung’s software.

January’s security patch has fixes for three Android OS vulnerabilities that were classified as critical. There are also fixes for several high-risk vulnerabilities. Samsung’s software has received fixes for four vulnerabilities that were identified.

Samsung is rolling out this latest Galaxy Xcover 4 firmware update in Turkey. It may be a while before users in other markets get it. Not to worry, though, we have the update available for download from our firmware section.

T-Mobile Caller Verified tool is exclusive to Galaxy Note 9

Galaxy Note 9 owners subscribed to T-Mobile in the U.S. have just got an exclusive feature. Your network provider has enabled a new “Caller Verified” technology on your device to protect you from scammers and spammers. The technology uses the new STIR/SHAKEN standards to combat illegal caller ID spoofing.

T-Mobile says the feature is available for customers with an updated Galaxy Note 9.

50% of U.S. mobile traffic in 2019 will be scam calls

Phone call and data enterprise company First Orion estimates that nearly 50 percent of U.S. mobile traffic will be scam calls in 2019. These calls, on top of being annoying, often trick users into losing hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars to fraudsters. While existing protection apps can blacklist known scam numbers, they hardly can identify newly spoofed ones.

T-Mobile is trying to fill that void with the Caller Verified technology. The telco will verify that the incoming call is authentic and is being made from the same number that is displayed on the screen. It will then display the “Caller Verified” message on your Galaxy Note 9 screen. More Galaxy devices and other smartphones should get the feature in the future. And once other carriers implement the STIR/SHAKEN standards, Caller Verified will work on calls made across networks.

The Galaxy Note 9, meanwhile, is yet to get the stable Android Pie One UI update in the U.S. In fact, the update has only been released in Germany for beta users. But with Samsung today publishing the Android Pie user manual for the device, one can suspect that the worldwide update is not far away.
