Samsung Galaxy Fold releases April 26 for $1,980

Samsung has finally unveiled its foldable smartphone today at its event in San Francisco. The company has also confirmed the details that we were most looking forward to. It has confirmed today that the Galaxy Fold is going to be released on April 26.

It was expected to be an expensive device and the Galaxy Fold has live up to that expectation. Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Fold price is going to start at $1,980.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is the first foldable smartphone from Samsung. It is the culmination of 8 years of research and development from the company. Samsung unveiled it at the Galaxy Unpacked event in San Francisco today. It actually kicked off the event by unveiling the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung confirmed on stage that the Galaxy Fold is going to hit shelves on April 26. Prices are going to start at $1,980. We have exclusively confirmed before that the Galaxy Fold will be available in both 4G LTE and 5G variants.

Bixby now supports German, Spanish, and Italian on devices running Android Pie

When Samsung launched Bixby, it was already late to the virtual assistant scene. Compared to other well-known offerings in the market, it was lacking in features and supported languages. Initially, the company kept promising support for more languages but didn’t offer any specifics. After a few comments here and there, Samsung finally announced at its developer conference that Bixby would soon support English (UK), German, Spanish, Italian, and French languages.

In December last year, Bixby started supporting these languages in beta form on the Galaxy Note 9. It appears English (UK), German, Spanish, and Italian are finally out of beta and now available on all other Bixby-enabled Galaxy devices running Android Pie. Though the French language is also listed, it is still marked as beta. We can see these languages on our Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9/S9+, and Galaxy S8/S8+ on Android Pie. Our Galaxy Note 8 with Android Oreo doesn’t display these languages in Bixby, confirming the requirement of Android Pie to use Samsung’s virtual assistant in these languages.

It is not clear if this is a server-side change on supported devices or requires a Bixby update. For what it is worth, these languages are available for use in Bixby version 2.0.52.14.  Samsung will probably announce the expanded language support at its Galaxy S10 Unpacked event in San Francisco today.

BREAKING: Samsung just released Android Pie beta for Galaxy A7 (2018)

It was already impressive that Samsung launched a Android Pie beta program for the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 instead of just the Galaxy S9 and Note 9, and the company seems to now have brought a mid-range device to the party as well. Galaxy A7 (2018) owners can register for the Android Pie/One UI beta program in India, with the first beta release already rolling out over the air.

The Galaxy A7 (2018) was the first mid-range phone that Samsung started testing Pie for, so it’s not surprising that it’s also the one to be getting a beta program. Before you get excited, we should tell you that at this point we don’t have as much evidence as we’d like, but a comment on one of our other stories and a post in the Samsung Members forums with a screenshot for the Pie beta OTA are proof enough that Samsung is indeed letting owners of a mid-range phone test the next version of Android.

If you own a Galaxy A7 (2018), open the Samsung Members app and go into the Notices section. A notice for the beta program should be in the list. Tap that, then use the Register button to enroll into the beta. Once you’ve registered, you should be able to download the first Pie beta from the Software update menu of the Settings app by tapping the Download updates manually option. The first beta includes the February 2010 security patch.

Launch of new Galaxy A series in India set for February 28

Samsung has revealed (through a notice in the Samsung Members app) that it will be launching its new Galaxy A series lineup in India on February 28th. The Galaxy A10, Galaxy A20, and Galaxy A30 are expected to be the first devices in the series according to rumors, and it seems the company will make them official just a day after it is going to unveil the Galaxy M30.

It isn’t surprising that Samsung has chosen India as the launchpad for the 2019 A series, as the company is hoping to turn the A series into the country’s biggest brand, with an aim to achieve $4 billion in sales till the end of 2019 from just the new Galaxy A phones. The Galaxy A10, Galaxy A20, and Galaxy A30 should be similar to the Galaxy M10, Galaxy M20, and Galaxy M30, with Infinity-U/Infinity-V displays, multiple rear cameras, and big batteries all around. At least the A20 and A30 may also have AMOLED displays.

We may also see the Galaxy A50 make an appearance soon, as photos of the device were discovered in the phone’s service manual recently. However, it remains to be seen if the A50 will make its first appearance in India. With features like an in-display fingerprint sensor and triple rear cameras, the A50 probably isn’t going to be as affordable as the rest of Samsung’s 2019 lineup of mid-range and budget phones.

We’ll find out soon enough, though, as February 28 is fast approaching. Samsung will be holding launch events in three major cities for fans, and iterested folks can register their interest in the Samsung Members app.

Galaxy Apps gets rebranded to Galaxy Store with a new One UI design

Samsung had announced at SDC 2018 last year that it would be rolling out a major update for Galaxy Apps. The update involves a design overhaul as well as a rebranding. Galaxy Apps will henceforth be called the Galaxy Store. As many would agree, that’s a much better name for the app.

The company has rolled out a new update for the app which rebrands it and also brings the One UI redesign. The app adopts the One UI design language nicely and will feel right at home on a Samsung device running Android Pie.

Not much else has been changed except the name of this app. It’s still being used to distribute apps and games for Samsung’s devices. Even though the Galaxy Store branding would suggest that it could eventually offer more than just apps. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

The user interface change is certainly noticeable as the One UI design language is hard to miss. The curvy UI elements and the large headers keep with the overall design aesthetic of Samsung’s Android Pie update. It does appear to be easier to navigate which many users would appreciate as the previous interface didn’t really make navigation easier. The bottom bar offers quick access to the main sections of the app.

The latest version of this app, v4.5.01.7, is now rolling out to Samsung devices running Android Pie. It’s a mandatory update so the old version won’t work when this arrives on your device. Galaxy Store is now available for download from our APK page. It will most likely come pre-installed on the Galaxy S10.

Is this Samsung’s foldable smartphone?

The Galaxy S10 has been thoroughly leaked but the same can’t be said for the so-called Galaxy Fold. There haven’t been that many leaks for Samsung’s foldable smartphone and that might be changing today. A couple of images have surfaced online which claim to show off the foldable smartphone.

It’s not immediately clear if these are fan renders or official renders of the device. The device in these images is in line with the expectations for the Galaxy Fold’s design. It’s going to fold out in a book-like fashion.

The first image shows the Galaxy Fold being folded out to reveal the larger internal display. Samsung confirmed at SDC 2018 that it will have a 7.3-inch display on the inside. There’s going to be a 4.6-inch external display for use when the device isn’t folded out. The internal display will have a 1536×2152 pixel resolution.

The second image shows the device being folded open like a book. We can also see a couple of cameras up top with a rather sharp cut in the display border to accommodate the shooters. Samsung didn’t show this off during SDC so it can’t be said for sure right now whether or not this is what the inside of the Galaxy Fold will look like.

We will potentially get all of the official details later today. Samsung’s first Unpacked event of the year takes place in San Francisco today. It’s also expected to unveil the Galaxy Fold at this event. Samsung has been teasing the foldable smartphone’s launch at the Galaxy S10 event for a few weeks now.

Here’s where (and when) to watch Samsung’s Galaxy S10 launch event

In a short while, Samsung will take to the stage to take the wraps off the flagship Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+, and budget Galaxy S10e, at a dedicated launch event in San Francisco, California. Here’s how to watch the Galaxy S10 launch live online, along with the all-important kick-off time.

Let’s start with the time: Samsung’s Unpacked event will commence at 11 am PST on February 20. That’s 6:30 am AET, 2:00 pm ET and 7:00 pm GMT. The conference will be streamed on the firm’s website for fans all over the world to come together and watch the action unfold in real-time.

That doesn’t mean you need to head over to Samsung’s website to tune in, though — you’ll be able to see what it has up its sleeve right from this very page. You will, however, need to check back nearer the time for that as the on-site YouTube stream won’t be live until around an hour before it starts.

It will also be streamed on Facebook and Twitter, for those who like to comment on the news as soon as it breaks, without having to switch between multiple browser windows. But we’d recommend staying right here as we’ll be on the floor providing complete coverage of the event.
