Samsung embarrasses iPhone 12 Pro Max cameras in new TV ads

Samsung has a habit of going after Apple in advertisements for its flagship phones, and the company is doing it again. Samsung US has come out with two short TV spots to tell everyone why they should buy the Galaxy S21 Ultra instead of the iPhone 12 Pro Max if they’re looking for the best camera performance, and Samsung has cleverly selected just the right scenarios to pull this off.

‘Your phone upgrade shouldn’t be a downgrade’ is Samsung’s new punchline

The first TV spot compares photos of a cheese sandwich captured by the S21 Ultra and the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the former offers considerably higher detail thanks to its 108MP resolution and a more vivid image. But it’s the second ad that really shows why there’s no competition here. Samsung’s flagship is able to take an excellent 100x zoom shot of the moon while the iPhone fails miserably as it maxes out at 12x magnification.

To be fair, 12x isn’t enough for any smartphone when it comes to capturing pictures of the moon. But it’s worth mentioning that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the absolute best of what Apple currently has to offer, so that kind of zoom performance is downright embarrassing in 2020/2021. Of course, we can say the same about the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung’s $2000 foldable that maxes out at 10x zoom, but that’s a discussion for another day.

Samsung Notes crosses a billion installs on the Google Play Store

The Samsung Notes app is one of the best apps developed in-house by Samsung for Galaxy smartphones and tablets, and it has now reached an impressive milestone on the Google Play Store. Samsung Notes recently crossed a billion installs (spotted by folks over at Android Police) on Android’s default app store, joining a couple of other Samsung apps that have achieved this feat, including Samsung Internet, Samsung Email, and Samsung Voice Recorder.

A billion installs, many more notes?

Despite being an important part of Samsung’s proprietary app lineup, Samsung Notes doesn’t come pre-installed on every Galaxy device. That’s because Notes is designed around the S Pen that you used to get exclusively on Galaxy Note devices and some tablets before Samsung brought support for its stylus to the Galaxy S series phones with the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

However, you can use it to make text notes, and there are plenty of other excellent features, like being able to import PDF files and write on them or adding voice notes that sync to your drawings and notations. All those features are now at the disposal of more than a billion Galaxy users, or at least a billion devices as that is what ultimately counts (some users have multiple devices, and an install on each of them counts towards Google Play’s total installs figure).

New renders of Samsung’s first Fan Edition tablet show keyboard cover

Samsung’s first Fan Edition tablet is coming soon, as evidenced by the numerous appearances it has been making all around the internet recently. From spec and press render leaks to regulatory certification, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE has been through it all, and the only that’s remaining now is a look at the tablet in the flesh. While you will have to continue waiting for that, you can feast your eyes on yet another set of renders of the device that have leaked courtesy of Roland Quandt.

Like the renders we saw before, these show the Galaxy Tab S7 FE sitting in its Book Cover case, but we also get to see it in what is likely to be called the Book Cover Keyboard accessory. The S Pen is on full display as well. We also get to see all five case colors (and, as a result, all possible colors of the tablet itself) – black, blue, silver, green, and pink. Color variety is clearly something Samsung is taking seriously for its Fan Edition devices, as it is in line with what we saw for the Galaxy S20 FE that launched last year.

Unfortunately, it seems Samsung won’t be keeping things similar on the specifications front. While the Galaxy S20 FE shared most of the main Galaxy S20 lineup’s flagship features, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE is set to be a decidedly mid-range affair. It will keep the huge 12.4-inch screen and 10,090 mAh battery of the Galaxy Tab S7+, but will see downgrades in several other areas. For example, the screen will be of the LCD type and the Snapdragon 865 will be replaced by the Snapdragon 750G, which also powers the Galaxy A52 5G.

Speaking of 5G, the new ultra-fast wireless standard will be supported on the Galaxy Tab S7 FE, though an LTE variant will be on offer as well. The tablet is expected to launch sometime in June, so it shouldn’t be long before we get all the official details from Samsung. [List] Galaxy devices that will be eligible for One UI 4.0 (Android 12) update

One UI 4.0 has yet to be officially confirmed, but unless Samsung decides to make drastic changes to the design philosophy around its software platform, then One UI 4.0 will be based on Android 12, and it will represent a major evolutionary step over One UI 3.5. The latter version is expected to debut in August with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3.

One UI 4.0 will be Samsung’s ninth One UI version upgrade. As expected, some Galaxy phones and tablets will be eligible for this future Android 12-based firmware update, while others will be left behind. Furthermore, Android 12 will be the last major firmware update for some of those Galaxy devices, and they were labeled accordingly in the list below.

This is a comprehensive list of Galaxy phones and tablets that are expected to receive Android 12 together with One UI 4.0 at some point in the future, according to Samsung’s Android update policy.

As a reminder, Samsung is now offering three major Android OS updates to select Galaxy phones and tablets instead of two. This policy is valid for Galaxy devices that were released 2019 onwards with Android 9 or later. The list below accounts for this new firmware update policy.

Please note that the list isn’t final and could change in the future. We will keep it updated in the coming months as we get closer to the release of Android 12 and One UI 4.0.

Galaxy S21 Ultra crushed all other Android phones in Q1 2021

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is Samsung’s top-of-the-line flagship. It was introduced earlier this year alongside two other models in the same family. Despite its significant price tag, the handset appears to have performed well in the market.

There’s a good reason for that. The amount of tech that Samsung has packed into the Galaxy S21 Ultra is just bonkers. The Ultra variant remains the company’s everything and the kitchen skin phone. So no surprise that it was the best-selling Android phone by revenue in Q1, 2021.

Galaxy S21 Ultra brought home the bacon

The latest numbers from Counterpoint show that smartphones achieved a global first-quarter revenue record in Q1 2021. That’s largely due to pent up demand and lifting of lockdowns in most major markets across the globe.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra accounted for 3% of this record revenue pie, making it the top Android device on the list. It’s actually fifth on the top ten list. The first four spots are all occupied by iPhones.

Interestingly, six of the ten devices are all iPhones. The Galaxy S21 5G and Galaxy S21+ 5G are in 7th and 9th spots with 2% and 1% of the revenue share. The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is the only other Android device on the list at the 8th spot with 2% of the revenue pie.

It’s understandable why Samsung’s top devices feature so prominently. High-end smartphones have higher margins. You won’t find the Galaxy S21 models on the top ten list of smartphones by volume share.

Samsung shipped the most units of the Galaxy A12, Galaxy A21s and the Galaxy A31 in Q1, 2021. The Redmi 9A was actually the best-selling Android phone by volume. The volumes for Samsung’s budget models were primarily driven by India, MEA and LATAM markets. This goes to show that the strategy Samsung has implemented for its budget devices is reaping dividends.

South Korea and the USA discuss incentives and tax cuts for Samsung

South Korean President Moon Jae-in attended a White House summit with US President Joe Biden earlier today, and the main topics of conversation were the ongoing semiconductor shortage and the Biden administration’s plans to establish a strong local chipmaking infrastructure with the help of companies like Samsung. On the other hand, Reuters reported today that the South Korean government is seeking tax cuts and incentives for companies like Samsung; companies that have the required expertise to establish a strong local supply chain.

Samsung may have chosen Austin, Texas, as the main site for its new $18 billion chip manufacturing plant, however, Reuters claims that no new public documentation was filed on the topic since March, indicating that Samsung’s final decision could still be influenced by the Biden administration’s plans to offer tax cuts and incentives to companies who are willing to invest and establish new factories on US soil. After all, the new facility in Austin, Texas, would create roughly 1,800 new jobs.

Time will tell what the Biden administration will decide in this regard, but one thing is clear: both the US Department of Commerce and the Korean Ministry of Industry agreed today that healthy cooperation across the chip industry requires incentives, joint research and development, cooperation on setting standards, and manpower trading and exchange.

South Korea confirms that a new EUV photoresist supplier has entered the scene

As reported exactly one week ago, the world’s only supplier of EUV-based chipset manufacturing equipment, ASML, plans to set up shop in Korea. This could be highly advantageous for Samsung Semiconductor, as the company would most likely find it easier to secure EUV manufacturing equipment locally rather than shipping it from the Netherlands.

But in recent news, it turns out that South Korea’s EUV supply chain will grow even further thanks to a new supplier of photoresist solutions. According to the same Reuters report, the South Korean government confirmed today that US-based chemical company DuPont has announced plans to establish a research & development center in South Korea for the purpose of developing technologies such as photoresist for EUV lithography.

To be precise, DuPont doesn’t plan to manufacture EUV factory equipment and compete with ASML, but instead, the company will strengthen the local photoresist supply chain. The supply of photoresist solutions has been an issue for South Korea and Samsung ever since Japan’s 2019 trade ban.
