Samsung continues sustainability push with six new restaurants

Samsung’s latest sustainability push isn’t about energy efficiency but something completely different – sustenance. Namely, the company is just wrapping up a tender to build half a dozen new restaurants at various locations throughout its home country. These are essentially cafeterias; employee-only outlets which will be constructed within existing corporate offices.

Samsung approached this internal expansion in quite a methodical manner. Nevermind the fact that it used a tender to select contractors to partner with; it’s that the decision, itself, took months, with the company ultimately going over some 40 bids from all over the country. In the end, it picked six catering firms and restaurants to partner with, one for each location, local media reports. F&B and Ivy Food are some of the names that made the shortlist which has yet to be publicized in its entirety.

Samsung’s sustainability efforts are getting noticed internationally

Apart from a handful of offices in and around Seoul, Samsung also intends to build an in-house restaurant at its Gumi-si assembly line in central South Korea. All six locations are scheduled to open by the end of the year, likely sometime in December. Sustainability efforts aside, the immediate goal of this initiative is to increase the quality of working conditions at Samsung by offering employees a wider selection of high-quality meals, a company official said. This is hardly a surprise, coming from the world’s best employer.

In related news, Samsung’s global efforts to run a more sustainable business are once again getting noticed internationally. The South Korean giant earned a high-ranking finish at this year’s iteration of Interbrand’s Best Global Brands list.

Galaxy S22 Ultra’s design is closer to Galaxy Note than Galaxy S series

The Galaxy S22 series is expected to go official in early February 2022, but the specifications of the phones in the series have leaked already. A new leak shows that the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with a change in its design language compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

A new image published by tipster @UniverseIce compares the screen sizes and screen curvatures of the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy S22 is expected to feature a 6.1-inch display, while the Galaxy S22+ has a 6.5-inch display. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to feature a 6.8-inch display. More importantly, the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22+ have curved screen corners, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra features sharper corners.

Usually, Galaxy S series smartphones have curved screen corners, while Galaxy Note series devices have sharper screen corners. This leak shows that the design of the Galaxy S22 Ultra could be closer to the Galaxy Note series than the Galaxy S series. Previous leaks have also shown that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will be compatible with the S Pen and even have a dedicated S Pen slot, which will surely make Galaxy Note series fans happy.

Samsung may have killed the Galaxy Note series, but it looks like it is taking its legacy forward with the Galaxy S series, particularly with the Ultra model.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to feature a 120Hz Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, an Exynos 2200 or Snapdragon 898 processor, up to 12GB RAM, up to 512GB storage, a 40MP selfie camera, and a 108MP quad-camera setup on the rear. It could also feature an IP68 rating, stereo speakers, 5G, a 5,000mAh battery, wireless charging, and 45W fast wired charging.

Snapdragon-based Galaxy S22+ for USA runs better in latest benchmark

To our lack of surprise, the Galaxy S22 series should feature the Snapdragon 898 chipset in some markets and the Exynos 2200 in others. Leaked evidence indicates that the Galaxy S22 in the USA will be powered by Qualcomm’s solution, and a new online benchmark supports this notion even further.

The Galaxy S22+ with model number SM-S906U that’s headed for the US market was spotted at Geekbench today, a couple of months after the base model made its first disappointing appearance in the same online benchmark. Thankfully, the latest benchmark scores show a lot more promise this time around, as the device topped 1,163 points in the single-core tests and 2,728 points in multi-core.

In contrast, the Galaxy S22+ for the international market (SM-S906B) will be equipped with the Exynos 2200 chipset, and it, too, was spotted at Geekbench not long ago. It scored 1,073 and 3,389 points in single and multi-core tests, respectively (up from 475 / 1,393 points a few months back).

The Snapdragon 898 chipset is expected to have one high-performance Cortex-X2 core, three performance cores, and four efficiency cores along with an Adreno 730 graphics chip. Other previous benchmarks show that the same SoC will also power the unannounced Galaxy Tab S8 series.

The Qualcomm-powered Galaxy S22 flagship trio will be limited to the USA and one or two more regions. The rest of the world should get the Exynos 220 SoC instead.

A base Galaxy S22 and two Ultra models could’ve made Samsung fans happier

The Galaxy S22 series will look very different next to all other prior Galaxy S generations. The upcoming trio of flagships should consist of a base model, a Plus variant, and the top-tier Galaxy S22 Ultra. Although the naming scheme isn’t out of the ordinary, what is very unusual about the upcoming flagship trio is that the upper-tier model could break the mold in unprecedented ways. Because of this, I’m inclined to believe that Samsung should’ve also looked into giving the rest of the Galaxy S22 series — or more specifically the Plus model — a fresh coat of paint. Let’s elaborate.

Samsung can’t make everyone happy with the way the Galaxy S22 series looks right now

In case you missed the recent leaks, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to feature an S Pen and a dedicated holster for the accessory, as well as all the essential S Pen software tools a Note user might need. In other words, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will virtually be a full-fledged Galaxy Note model with a different name.

Samsung fans are split into at least three camps when it comes to the Galaxy S22 Ultra redesign. Some Galaxy Note fans seemingly care more about the “Note” moniker itself rather than the phone’s actual capabilities, but other customers can look past the surface level and are happy with how the Galaxy S22 Ultra is shaping up after they were denied a new Note model this year.

Thirdly, there are Galaxy S fans who have used these flagships for years but now feel as if they’ll be sacrificed to the Galaxy Note altar for the greater good. These customers want the best Galaxy S smartphone but don’t care about the S Pen and aren’t willing to sacrifice any hardware specs for the sake of this undesired accessory.

Personally, I’m in favor of the S Pen becoming more popular. I’m all for the proliferation of the S Pen, as I believe that the accessory would greatly benefit from dropping its Galaxy Note exclusivity — which it did after the launch of the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Nevertheless, it’s very unusual to think that the Galaxy S22 series will treat Galaxy Note fans better than it will Galaxy S fans, and this is precisely where Samsung might be screwing up.

Samsung should’ve went back to the drawing board for the rest of the Galaxy S22 series

As much as I appreciate the qualities of the S Pen, not everyone does, and especially not every Galaxy S fan. These customers have had the option to switch to the Note series for years but didn’t, so from that perspective, it feels rather unfair for Samsung to now be forcing the S Pen onto them.

Their next-best option will be the Galaxy S22+, which, according to early leaks, will be nothing more than a slightly larger Galaxy S22, complete with a plastic build. And this is where I believe Samsung should’ve taken more time to come up with a different approach and balance out the fact that the Ultra model won’t follow conventions.

Instead of a base Galaxy S22 model, a Galaxy S22+, and a Galaxy S22 Ultra with an S Pen, perhaps Samsung should’ve considered developing the base model along with two nearly-identical Ultra variants, save for the lack of the inclusion of a dedicated S Pen holster in each. This way, Galaxy S fans who want the best of the best could still have the top-tier Ultra model without having to pay extra for the S Pen, while Galaxy Note fans could finally buy a new S Pen model for 2022 without getting weird looks from diehard Galaxy S fans who’ll feel like they got robbed of their premium model.

As it stands, the leaked Galaxy S22 lineup just doesn’t feel right because the Ultra model seemingly went through such drastic changes while the base and Plus variants haven’t. It’s understandable for the base model to remain more conservative for cost reasons, but the Galaxy S22+ looks like a missed opportunity to keep Galaxy S fans happier. Which they probably would be if Samsung were to drop the Plus variant and focus on creating a base model and two mirrored Ultra flagship experiences separated by the S Pen, or lack thereof.

It has a dedicated S Pen holster, and it looks very much like a Galaxy Note device, which means that the future of the Galaxy Note series itself might be in jeopardy. Samsung gives Experience Stores in Canada a new look ahead of holidays

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Samsung Canada announced today that it’s reopening two Experience Stores in Ontario and British Columbia. Namely, the stores are located at the Yorkdale Mall in Toronto and the Metrotown Mall in Burnaby. The Yorkdale store reopened yesterday, whereas the Metrotown Mall store is scheduled to reopen its doors from mid-November.

The redesigned Experience Stores have new repair service centers, new customer product training areas, new mobile transaction stations, and designated spaces for quick online order pickup. Evidently, the revamped stores also allow Samsung customers to test the company’s latest innovative products, from the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 to the Galaxy Watch 4 series and Bespoke Editions.

Samsung reopened the redesigned Experience Store at the Yorkdale Mall yesterday, and says it will reopen the Metrotown Mall store later this month. Until then, Samsung customers can visit a temporary store located on the shopping center’s upper level. The temporary store will eventually shut down once Samsung finishes redesigning the Experience Store within the next few weeks.

Samsung claims that the new internal design of its stores helps the company meet safety protocol expectations without diluting the brand’s image. To date, Samsung has seven Experience Stores in Canada, three of which are located in Toronto. It’s worth noting that Canada isn’t the only country where Samsung is redesigning its retail space. The company set a new benchmark in retail last month when it reopened its Experience Store in London. It seems like it’s a global endeavor, though it might take some time for every Experience Store in the world to get the new look.

Townscaper

Townscaper is a beautiful game about… nothing, really. Sure, you get to do some townscaping, but in the grand scheme of things, what you get out of this game is entirely up to you. Because unlike your typical city-builder, Townscaper doesn’t feel like a chore to play. There are no convoluted achievements, log-in bonuses, or other mechanics designed to stoke your fears of missing out. It’s just you, your screen, and a hand-drawn sandbox filled with possibilities.

So, if you’re looking for a relaxing, open-ended experience that enables creativity, Townscaper definitely takes the cake this month.

Shin Megami Tensei L Dx2

Shin Megami Tensei is one of the longest-running game franchises of all time; in terms of sheer longevity, it’s up there with Mario and Zelda. And with SMT V releasing this month, there’s hardly a better time to pick up this mobile spin-off and get a refresher on its unique lore based on a huge variety of pop culture.

While it’s designed as a free-to-play experience, the core mechanics of SMT L Dx2 are in line with mainline games. Meaning you’re looking at a monster-catching, party-based RPG not unlike Pokemon. The biggest exception is that these games can get pretty difficult if you aren’t paying attention to type weaknesses and other auxiliary mechanics.

Game Dev Story

A game about becoming a legendary game developer from a legendary game developer. If you have never played a Kairosoft game, you owe it to yourself to give its gameplay formula a spin, and Game Dev Story is arguably the best entry point into its vast catalogue. Both in terms of accessibility and overall refinement.

Back when mobile gaming was still in a state of chaotic flux, circa 2010, this Japanese studio was putting out one amazing portable experience after another. Its games do get kind of samey after a while, but Game Dev Story is still the brightest star of the lot. Its near-infinite replay value and a tightly designed gameplay loop amount to a tycoon manager that we love coming back to. And chances are, so will you.

Terraria

If you’re on the lookout for a good value deal this November, the enormous amount of content packed into Terraria is going to be difficult to beat. For those not in the loop, Terraria is basically a 2D, side-scrolling take on Minecraft. Meaning it’s a procedurally generated sandbox with amazing replay value.

The latter gets even more amazing once you turn to multiplayer, be that local or online. With up to seven other players in the mix, Terraria delivers a truly astonishing rate of bang for your buck.
