Verizon pushes One UI 4.0 update to Galaxy S21 in the US

Samsung is getting better than ever when it comes to software updates. Yesterday, the company released the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update to the international variants of the Galaxy S21 series. Today, Verizon has joined Samsung in releasing the update to the carrier-locked versions of the smartphones.

Verizon has revealed on its website that it has released the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update to Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra units on its network in the US. The latest update comes with firmware version G99xUSQU4BUK7 and includes the November 2021 security patch that fixes dozens of privacy and security-related vulnerabilities.

If you are a Galaxy S21 series smartphone user on Verizon’s network in the US, you might have received a notification of the new update. If you haven’t received it yet, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install on your smartphone.

It is unprecedented to see Verizon release a major Android OS update to smartphones on its network on the same day as the international versions received it. Samsung may have worked closely with Verizon to make this happen. Usually, there is a delay of at least a few days before carrier-locked Galaxy devices get a new update.

The One UI 4.0 update brings a revamped UI design, Material You-inspired color themes, improved widgets, a new widget picker UI, improved privacy and security, and more feature-rich stock apps. The update also brings dozens of new and nifty features to make your experience better.

Galaxy S10 Lite gets November 2021 security update

Samsung surprised everyone yesterday by releasing the stable version of the Android 12 update to the Galaxy S21. Today, the company has released the November 2021 security update to the Galaxy S10 Lite.

The latest software update for the Galaxy S10 Lite comes with firmware version G770FXXS6EUK1. The update comes with the November 2021 security patch that fixes dozens of vulnerabilities found in Android and Galaxy devices in general. While we don’t have the changelog for the update yet, it might also contain device stability improvements.

The new update is currently available in Spain, but it should expand to more markets over the next few weeks. If you are in Spain and have a Galaxy S10 Lite, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy S10 Lite in early 2020 with Android 10-based One UI 2. The company released the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 update to the smartphone earlier this year. The device will get at least one major Android OS update in the future.

Samsung’s Android 12 release for Galaxy S21 humbles all other OEMs

We were hoping for One UI 4.0 to launch in November after a Samsung Community Manager hinted at a possible early release, and sure enough, the update went live today for the Galaxy S21 series worldwide. The One UI 4.0 update introduces new customization options, new privacy settings, as well as other refinements to the user experience and the UI. But aside from the update’s content, what really impressed us this time around was Samsung’s fantastic firmware support and the speed with which it released the first One UI 4.0 public build.

Samsung began testing One UI 4.0 for the Galaxy S21 series in mid-September, which means it took the company only two months to transition from the first beta build to the first public One UI 4.0 release. Samsung was able to roll out the Android 12-based update less than a month after Google launched the firmware for its Pixel phones, so there’s not much the Korean tech giant could’ve done to speed things up even more.

Samsung sets the standard others can’t reach

Last year, the Android 11 update got released for the Galaxy S20 series in December, but Samsung’s software engineers were quicker this time around. The One UI 4.0 update is now available for the Galaxy S21 series, and other devices will follow sooner or later. Let’s hope that they’ll all enjoy the kind of treatment the Galaxy S21 series got and receive One UI 4.0 promptly. If anyone can do it, it’s Samsung.

Google’s reportedly shelving its Pixel Fold plans, letting Samsung thrive

Google doesn’t see much profit in pursuing foldable devices yet, and the company has reportedly shelved its plans for the so-called Pixel Fold until further notice. According to a new report from DSCC, Google canceled parts orders and won’t be releasing the Pixel Fold this year or in the first half of 2022.

Google’s plans for the foldable segment are now pretty much up in the air, at least as far as foldable Pixel hardware is concerned. Of course, the company just unveiled the fold-centric Android 12L mobile OS version a few weeks ago, and Google should continue improving the platform, but its hardware plans are now reportedly on hold.

The company won’t release the so-called Pixel Fold before the first half of 2022, and there’s no guarantee that H2 will look any different. Here’s what Google’s thinking.

The market’s not big enough yet for both Samsung and Google

The rumored Pixel Fold was being developed with help from Samsung’s component supply chain. The device was said to share a few similarities with the Galaxy Z fold 3, particularly around the display area, as it would boast UTG, an LTPO backplane, and 120Hz capabilities. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is very popular for a device of its type, but of course, if Google will eventually get back on track and release its first foldable phone, it could be very different than the original vision.

As to the reasons behind Google’s alleged decision, well, the company reportedly doesn’t feel like going against Samsung in the niche foldable device segment is a wise idea. It views this as a costly endeavor that doesn’t offer enough revenue avenues, and Google seems happy with letting Samsung lead the segment for the time being, which it does. The company also launched a dedicated website for Samsung’s new foldable phones, so it seems like Google wants this device category to succeed but doesn’t want to commit to it yet.

These Good Lock modules fully support One UI 4.0

The highly anticipated One UI 4.0 firmware update went live for the Galaxy S21 series today, and Good Lock users might be wondering what modules are now fully supported by the first public Android 12-based firmware version. A few modules got updated with One UI 4.0 support throughout the beta period, but testing is over.

The list of Good Lock modules that already offer compatibility with One UI 4.0 includes LockStar, ClockFace, MultiStar, NavStar, SoundAssistant, Keys Cafe, Theme Park, Nice Catch, and QuickStar, the latter of which was added to the beta program a couple of weeks ago.

The first public One UI 4.0 build for the Galaxy S21 series should also be compatible with Good Lock modules such as Routine+, One Hand Operation+, Pentastic, Wonderland, and Edge Touch, as they were available throughout the beta period. If your favorite module isn’t on this list, it may be added at a later date, though there’s no guarantee of this yet. Good Lock is a platform for experimental features, and it sadly isn’t available everywhere. You could be running One UI 4.0 on your Galaxy S21 without ever knowing about Good Lock modules, but we’re still hoping that Samsung will eventually make this platform available to more Galaxy phone customers in additional markets. OnePlus may want to rival Samsung in 2022 by immitating it more

Samsung may have inspired OnePlus to rethink the launch schedule for its next flagship phone, the OnePlus 10. Earlier this year, Samsung decided to release the Galaxy S21 series ahead of the usual timeframe as a way to counter Apple’s latest iPhones. The strategy seems to have worked out, and now, OnePlus is reportedly planning to use a similar strategy against Samsung.

The OnePlus 10 series should have been planned for release around March 2022, exactly one year after the OnePlus 9 lineup debuted. However, according to a recent report, the OEM intends to unveil the 10 series in January or February, presumably in an attempt to divert the public’s attention away from Samsung’s upcoming flagships.

The Galaxy S22 series is expected to be unveiled in early February and hit the shelves later the same month. It should consist of the Galaxy S22, the Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra featuring a dedicated S Pen. Samsung is also likely to launch the Galaxy S21 FE in January, so all eyes will be fixed on the Korean tech giant throughout the first quarter of next year.

OnePlus kind of lost what made it interesting after the release of the Galaxy A52 5G, which proves Samsung’s capable of developing an affordable mid-range phone packed full of great features. The Chinese company was also criticized for its revamped update policy, which doesn’t look as good next to Samsung’s. With that in mind, it wouldn’t surprise us the report is accurate and OnePlus plans to challenge Samsung with an early 2022 release of its next flagship series.

Disney jumps on foldables with Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel / Star Wars Editions

Samsung announced a couple of Disney-themed accessories for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 last month, and it turns out that those accessories were a part of more comprehensive Special Edition packages that are now available for purchase in Singapore. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition are offered online exclusively through Shopee.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition are worth $1,522 each, but Shopee is offering them in exchange for $1,298. Early adopters also had the opportunity to drop the price further down to $1,111.

What’s included in the Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition Galaxy Z Flip 3?

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition are similar in that they both include the 128GB foldable phone, a Silicone Cover with Strap, and a Marvel / Star Wars themed lanyard strap. The device is also accompanied by a Shopee power bank, which should help users alleviate one of the biggest concerns regarding the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s performance: battery life.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition are available in different colors and have a shipping timeframe of roughly two weeks. There’s no word on whether these editions will be sold outside of Singapore, but we’ll keep you posted if we find out more.
