Galaxy A50 starts getting November 2021 security update in multiple regions

Samsung has released the November 2021 security update to the Galaxy A50 in various countries around the world. The new security patch was released to the Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A52s 5G earlier this week. Most other high-end smartphones from the company received the update earlier this month.

The new software update for the Galaxy A50 has been released in Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the US (carrier-locked units), but not in South Korea and to the unlocked units in the US. You can see all the new firmware versions for the Galaxy A50 in the list below.

  • A505FDDS9CUK1: Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam
  • A505FNXXS9CUK1: Europe
  • A505GNDXS9CUK1: Fiji, New Zealand, Philippines, Taiwan
  • A505GTUBS9CUK1: Brazil

  • A505USQSGDUJ2: US
  • A505WVLSHDUJ3: Canada
  • A505YNDVS7CUK1: Australia

The new firmware brings the November 2021 security patch that fixes dozens of security-related vulnerabilities in the smartphone. As usual, the new software might also contain general bug fixes and device stability improvements.

If you are a Galaxy A50 user in any of the countries or regions mentioned above, you might have already received a notification of the update. If you haven’t received it yet, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL camera sensor coming to smartphones next year

Samsung had unveiled the world’s first 200MP smartphone camera sensor—ISOCELL HP1—a few months ago. It was earlier rumored that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a 200MP camera, but that isn’t actually the case. However, that doesn’t mean Samsung’s flagship camera isn’t coming to smartphones from other brands.

According to tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), Motorola will be the first smartphone brand to use Samsung’s 200MP camera sensor. The company is expected to launch a smartphone with a 200MP camera sometime in the first half of 2022. In the second half of 2022, the ISOCELL HP1 sensor will reportedly feature inside a Xiaomi smartphone. The tipster also mentioned that Samsung will use the 200MP sensor in its own smartphones, but didn’t give any particular launch time frame.

The ISOCELL HP1 is a 1/1.22-inch sensor with a 200MP resolution and a native pixel size of 0.64μm. It supports 2×2 (50MP images with 1.28µm pixels) and 4×4 pixel binning (12.5MP images with 2.65μm pixels) modes for higher light sensitivity in low-light conditions. In bright conditions, it is claimed to offer detailed images with a wide dynamic range and up to 8K 30fps videos. It can even record 4K 120fps videos with a wide field of view.

Some tipsters claim that this 200MP sensor will first be used in a higher mid-range Galaxy smartphone in Samsung’s lineup. In our opinion, the ISOCELL GN2 is Samsung’s best camera sensor. It is a 1/1.12-inch sensor (bigger than the 200MP ISOCELL HP1) with 1.4μm native pixel size. It features Dual Pixel Pro autofocus technology, Staggered HDR, 8K 30fps video recording, and 4K 120fps video recording.

Samsung sells over a million units of The Frame TV in 2021

Samsung has announced that it has managed to sell over a million units of The Frame TV worldwide in 2021. This is the first time its lifestyle TV sales crossed the million mark within a year. Since The Frame TV’s launch in 2017, the South Korean firm has sold nearly two million units. The company said that there’s massive demand from Europe and North America for its lifestyle TVs.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for big-screen and premium TVs has risen. Keeping that in mind, Samsung launched more screen size options for its lifestyle TVs, including The Frame. The TV is available in five sizes: 32-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch. In 2020, the South Korean firm introduced the QLED display technology to The Frame, and in 2021, it added the 4K 120Hz feature.

Samsung also allows users to change the look of the TV to match users’ home decor. Users can choose between a flat-style bezel (brown, teak, or white) and a beveled chamfer-style bezel (white or brick red). They can also wall-mount it or set it up on an art gallery-style studio stand. Samsung has also partnered with major art stores, artists, and museums worldwide to offer pieces of art via the Art Store.

Simon Sung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Sales & Marketing Team of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “The Frame is not just a device for watching TV, but a lifestyle product which enhances a space with its design and enriches consumers’ lives with an extensive art collection. We continue to look for ways to strengthen The Frame’s offerings to find innovative ways to satisfy consumers’ evolving needs and desires. We are also always exploring partnerships with new museums, galleries, and artists to offer a much wider range of collections in the Art Store.”

I wanted to take the Galaxy Z Fold 3 on a trip, but something stopped me

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 doesn’t feel like an experimental device, despite being just the third flagship foldable phone from Samsung. Its price tag of $1800 is impressive, too. In addition to giving you a nice large foldable screen, the Z Fold 3 has pretty much all the ingredients you expect in a top-of-the-line phone from Samsung, including water resistance and S Pen support.

My biggest gripe is that the cameras aren’t the best. The main rear camera is great, and the under-display camera is better than expected for a first-time tech. But the telephoto camera is outdated and can’t match even mid-range phones like the Galaxy A72, let alone the Galaxy S lineup.

Still, as I prepared to travel to another city this week, I looked at the Galaxy Z Fold 3 sitting in my drawer (it’s a review unit from Samsung; I don’t have the kind of money to buy foldables only to keep them in my drawer) and felt like taking it along as my main device. I wasn’t going on a leisure trip, so I thought I’d make do with the limited zooming capabilities of the camera.

But then I realized there’s another issue with this phone that makes it a less-than-ideal travel companion.

It’s the battery life.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 battery life is one of its few weaknesses

If you’ve read our Galaxy Z Fold 3 review, you’ll know that we weren’t impressed by its battery life. Where the original Fold and the Z Fold 2 could easily last a day, the Z Fold 3 can’t and is not nearly as dependable as its predecessors.

The fact that the Z Fold 3 has high refresh rate displays on both the inside and outside is clearly a factor here, but battery life is further impacted by the reduced battery capacity. The Z Fold 3 has a 4,400 mAh battery, 100 mAh less the Fold and the Z Fold 2.

So I decided to stick with my Galaxy S21 Ultra instead of switching to the Z Fold 3. The big screen on the latter can be useful when you’re travelling, but it’s not worth the trade-off in battery endurance. Here’s hoping Samsung addresses this next year… maybe by making a Galaxy Fold XL as I and many others wish for? We’ll have to wait and see!

Samsung’s leading MEA even though its phones are priced highest on average

The third quarter of the year was quite favorable for Samsung in several regions, including MEA and the Philippines, where the company is leading the charge ahead of its rivals.

The MEA smartphone market had the best Q3 on record. The market grew 1% year-on-year and an impressive 7.5% quarter-on-quarter. Counterpoint Research estimates that a total of 46.5 million smartphones were shipped to MEA in Q3.

Samsung was the most influential smartphone vendor in the MEA region at the end of Q3. The company’s market share declined from 23.1% to 20.5% year-on-year, however, Samsung managed to overcome supply issues and stop its quarterly decline. It recorded an 8% quarter-on-quarter increase in shipments in Q3.

Of note is that the average selling price for smartphones in the MEA region has steadily increased over the past couple of years, and Samsung’s phones saw the steepest climb, from an average price of $192 two years ago to $282 in Q3 2021.

Samsung climbs from 5th to 1st in the Philippines

Samsung was the 4th largest smartphone vendor in the Philippines at the end of the 3rd quarter last year, trailing behind Realme, Vivo, and Oppo. And although the Philippines smartphone market declined 9% year-on-year due to lockdowns and supply chain issues, Samsung was able to increase its market share from 15% in Q3 2020 to 23% a year later and steal the crown from Realme. Xiaomi continues leading online retail with a 31% market share, ahead of Realme and Samsung.

Market watchers believe that Samsung won the podium in the Philippines in Q3 2021 thanks to its low-cost and mid-range phones, such as the Galaxy A12 and the Galaxy A21s, which were “major contributors” to Samsung’s positive results.
