As Indian smartphone market registers increase, Samsung holds on to the lead

Latest data from Counterpoint Research reveals that the Indian smartphone market has registered an year-over-year increase of 21% but is down 8% quarter-over-quarter. Smartphones accounted for 37% of all handset shipments in the country in Q1 2015 with Samsung holding on to its lead despite mounting competition from local vendors.

It was first reported a couple of months back that Samsung had lost its lead in India to local OEM Micromax but Samsung was quick to refute that report with its own numbers. Counterpoint’s data shows that Samsung holds 27.8% of the Indian smartphone market with Micromax coming in second place with 15.3% market share. Intex, Lava and Lenovo came third, fourth and fifth accounting for 9.4%, 5.4% and 5.2% of the country’s smartphone market. Xiaomi’s shipments saw a decline during the quarter but it remained one of the best performing 4G smartphone brands in India owing to strong sales of the Mi Note 4G and Redmi 2 4G. Counterpoint’s report concludes that India was the third largest smartphone market in the world during Q1 2015.
