Samsung’s first smartwatch with a circular display has created a lot of interest among consumers and technology experts alike. The company is gearing up to launch the Gear S2 in its home market Korea on October 2, and it appears that there’s high demand for the smartwatch.
The Gear S2 was up for pre-order in Korea through Samsung’s Gold Rush Gear S2 book sales, and 1,000 units were available for pre-booking. According to local media, all the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic units were pre-booked within 2 hours after the booking process went live. It is expected that the competition between the Gear S2 and the Apple Watch is going to be intense.
The Gear S2 runs Tizen operating system, and features a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED display, a 1GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, a rotatable dial, water-resistance, and a 250 mAh battery with wireless charging capability.
Unlike previous smartwatches from Samsung, the Gear S2 will be compatible with non-Samsung Android smartphones running Android 4.4 KitKat (and above) and Bluetooth 4.0 LE connectivity. The South Korean smartphone giant is also said to be considering iOS compatibility for the Gear S2, similar to what Google did with Android Wear.
