Raspberry Pi, the tiny credit card-sized affordable computer that sold in millions, is quite popular with kids and enthusiasts as it can be used to learn programming through fun projects and build new things. Now, Samsung is trying to use Raspberry Pi’s popularity to improve the adoption of its Tizen operating system by porting it to the board computer.
Raspberry Pi has already been used to create drones, wearables, and other devices. Now, it is possible for enthusiasts to create custom versions of Tizen 3.0 for the development of the board. Samsung hopes that enthusiasts will create Tizen-based IoT devices using Raspberry Pi. Samsung uses Tizen in some of its smartphones, televisions, and wearables.
The Raspberry Pi 2 supports Linux flavors like Ubuntu as well as Microsoft’s Windows 10 IoT Core. It is now possible to create full-fledged Tizen versions through tools provided by Yocto and OpenEmbedded projects. These tools were discussed at the FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Developers’ European Meeting) conference last month.
It is also being reported that independent developers are also trying to port Tizen to MIPS architecture. Samsung is trying to increase Tizen’s adoption in the mobile and wearable device segments, with Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS operating systems still dominating those markets.
