Samsung reaches peak over-innovation with the Galaxy Surfboard

Companies we love often come up with wacky ideas that they push out under the garb of innovation and normally we play along, but sometimes they come out with an idea that makes us think whether the companies are just over-innovating, and seeing Samsung’s Galaxy Surfboard is going to make think along the same lines. Samsung created this contraption for pro-surfer Gabriel Medina so that he could remain connected to his smartphone even when he’s riding some killer waves.

The video posted online by Samsung Brazil shows that this surfboard has a secret compartment for the Galaxy S7 which serves as the brain, it’s also fitted with LEDs that show the surfer messages, tweets from his fans, tips from his coach as well as weather conditions, as if he wouldn’t have an idea about the conditions when he’s in the middle of the ocean. Predictably, people who surf are commenting that one of the main reasons why people ride waves is to feel disconnected from the world and to enjoy the feeling of being one with the ocean. Somehow bringing a smartphone along for the ride seems unnecessary. Innovation is good – it’s what makes the world move forward – but clearly the line has to be drawn somewhere.
