Following in the footsteps of Royal Mail, New Zealand Post has warned customers not to post or courier transport Galaxy Note 7 smartphones back to Samsung because of the safety risk they pose. Instead, it’s instructing owners to return their handset to the retailer they purchased it from in person.
NZ Post, operator of New Zealand’s main postal service, has revealed that it has special arrangements in place with authorized Galaxy Note 7 retailers to package and label handsets so they can be safely picked up by trained couriers. This type of service isn’t available at the standard PostShops dotted around the country.
“These [Galaxy Note 7s] are transported by road, not air, to Auckland before being returned to the various retailers’ distribution centres,” said NZ Post spokeswoman Clare Pasley. “Consumers should not try to send the phones through our network or drop them off at a PostShop.”
Samsung is offering Galaxy Note 7 owners in the region $100 — on top of a cash or credit refund — to compensate for the added “stress” and inconvenience of having to return their device amid several reports surfaced online and in the press of ‘safe’ replacement units exploding.
