Samsung’s flagship smartphones rank at the very top when it comes to the hardware they feature, but the Korean giant has been surprisingly slow at upgrading the selfie cameras on its devices. Samsung has stuck to a 5-megapixel front camera on its flagships for a long time now, and while it is unknown if the resolution will see a jump with the Galaxy S8, a report from ETNews says Samsung will be putting autofocus functionality on its next flagship’s front camera.
Front cameras with autofocus are still a rarity in the smartphone world, and many would argue it isn’t a feature you really need in order to take good selfies. But with selfies taking center stage in smartphone photography these days, manufacturers are bound to start looking at ways to improve the overall experience of capturing them. Again, it’s unclear if we will also see a bump in resolution on the S8′s front camera – it’s probably going to happen, especially with Apple having made a similar move with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
As with all rumors and speculation surrounding the Galaxy S8, this one should be taken with a pinch of salt. There’s a good chance the Galaxy S8 will make a delayed appearance compared to its predecessors as Samsung looks at ensuring the Galaxy Note 7 debacle doesn’t repeat itself, and a lot could change by the time the S8 makes an official appearance.
