Samsung launched an app called AllShare Play with the Galaxy S3 back in 2012. The app enabled users to share content between smartphones, notebooks, tablets and smart TVs over DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct. It could also be used to remotely access and manage files between the Galaxy S3 and a PC. AllShare Cast was a feature integrated into the app itself, it enabled users to mirror their Galaxy S3 screen on a TV.
The company revamped AllShare Play in 2013. It launched a completely new app with new features and renamed it to Samsung Link. The app could then be used to play content saved on other devices over Wi-Fi, access files across various devices using a Samsung account as well as upload photos and videos to PC or cloud storage services automatically.
Samsung is now sending out notifications to users confirming that it has terminated Samsung Link. The company says that due to a change in “internal operation policy” Samsung Link is no longer available as of November 1. Even though the service is no longer running, files stored on registered devices and services will not be deleted. Users will be able to access the remaining files through the individual devices or through their cloud storage service. Samsung has created a FAQ page which contains further information about Samsung Link’s termination.
It’s an odd move that comes out of the blue given that the Samsung Link app was only updated a few days ago, but it is what it is.
