Report: Galaxy S8 to use face recognition for mobile payments

Building on the rumor that surfaced last week claiming that the Galaxy S8 will sport a super-fast face recognition feature (capable of unlocking a device in 0.01 seconds), Bloomberg has published a report suggesting that Samsung will also use the technology as a form of authentication for mobile payments.

It’s thought that the Galaxy S8 will use a combination of fingerprint, iris and face detection to verify users when they attempt to access sensitive services, like banking applications and Samsung Pay. In the future, there’s potential for it to make its way to a slew of other services, too.

The company is “already working with banks to help them embrace facial recognition systems in coming months,” reads the report.

For those in need of a refresher, the Galaxy S8 certainly looks like it’s going to be an extremely impressive device, packing a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels, a Snapdragon 835 octa-core CPU, a 12MP rear-facing camera, an 8MP selfie shooter and a 3,000mAh battery.
