The Galaxy Note 8 has the biggest display ever of any Galaxy Note handset. The 6.3-inch Super AMOLED panel is impressive, to say the least. Given the size of the new handset, it doesn’t fit in any of the existing Gear VR headsets, not even the one Samsung launched earlier this year with the Galaxy S8.
Samsung did the only thing that it could have done: it launched a new headset. There’s a new Gear VR with Controller headset that has been launched today. Samsung hasn’t made any major changes. It’s just larger to accommodate the Galaxy Note 8.
Like others before it, the new Gear VR headset is backward compatible. This means that it works with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, the Galaxy Note 5, and the Galaxy S6 series.
This is the sixth Gear VR headset from Samsung. One can say that there are too many to keep track of now. Then again, the Gear VR leads the mobile VR space only because Samsung has pushed it with its flagship smartphones.
The new Gear VR costs $129.99 and will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow. Like the Galaxy Note 8, it will also go on sale come September 15.
