Samsung Pay could launch in South Africa later this month

Samsung Pay will launch in South Africa on September 22, which just so happens to be the same day the much-anticipated Galaxy Note 8 is scheduled to hit the shelves in the region, according to Craige Fletcher, Head of Mobile at Samsung Electronics SA.

It’s unclear what banks and credit unions will be supported when Samsung Pay debuts in South Africa, but it’s safe to assume that everyone will be able to take advantage of the platform on launch day by using PayPal as their preferred payment method.

Once they’ve linked their PayPal account to Samsung Pay, customers will be able to spend their virtual Balance in any brick-and-mortar retail store, earning reward points for every transaction processed using the immensely-popular mobile payment platform.

As we’ve said in the past, Samsung Pay is compatible with a slew of Galaxy-branded smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6, Galaxy J7 Pro and Galaxy J7 (2016)—but support varies region by region.

While we’d recommend adding the September 22 release date to your diary, it would probably best to use a pencil as it’s likely possible that Samsung’s running behind schedule (it’s happened before, and it’ll happen again).

Thanks, Kwetsima!
