Samsung’s biggest factory will be inaugurated in India today

Samsung is set to inaugurate its biggest mobile factory in the world today. It’s going to be one of the largest mobile phone manufacturing units in the world in terms of production capacity, located at Sector 81 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. The country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will visit the site later today to officially inaugurate Samsung’s biggest mobile factory.

Samsung’s biggest factory

The Samsung unit was set up in Noida back in 1995 and it was used to initially produce television sets. The company started producing refrigerators at the plant in 2003 while mobile phone production started in 2007. The new facility is spread across an area of over 140,000 square meters.

India is one of the biggest smartphone markets for Samsung. It made $5 billion in mobile sales in India for the fiscal ending 2017 with revenues surging 27 percent. Samsung ended Q1 2018 with a 40 percent value market share and a 37 percent volume market share in India. All of the units that it sells in the country are manufactured at the Noida plant.

It was revealed last year that Samsung was looking to invest $620 million in India to double smartphone production. The plan was to expand the existing facility in Noida to double smartphone production from 67 million units to almost 120 million units per month. The expansion will also result in a twofold increase in the monthly production of refrigerators from 100,000 units to 200,000 units per month.

The bulk of the devices that Samsung produces in India are meant for sale in the country but reports suggest that the company may now also export smartphones made at the Noida facility to markets across Africa, West Asia and Europe.
