Samsung has been working with many telecom operators around the world to develop and deploy 5G networks in the near future. The company and its industry partners have been conducting many demos and trials to test their 5G solutions and drum up the excitement for the launch of 5G networks.
The latest in the series of these collaborations is the coming together of Samsung and Telefónica Deutschland to run 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trials in Germany. The trial involves 20 households in Hamburg testing the Gigabit technology over a period of three months, starting this November.
Trial uses Samsung’s end-to-end 5G solution
Samsung will provide the “end-to-end millimeter wave (26 GHz) solution” for the trial. It consists of specialized hardware and software such as a virtual core, a 5G radio access unit, outdoor CPE, indoor routers, etc. to enable Gigabit speeds without any fiber-optic cables. The trial intends to showcase an “attractive alternative” to the current Gigabit solutions which suffer from last mile connectivity issues.
“5G FWA is a promising, fast-to-market and cost-effective way to bring Giga-speed broadband to people across the country, and a viable alternative where fiber deployment is not feasible,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing Team, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics.
