Always On Display to get colored notification icons with Android Pie

Android Pie will bring notable user interface changes, as leaked firmware for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 have revealed. A new dark theme is the main addition, and it will likely be part of the reason why Project Treble won’t be too useful for Samsung. As with all major upgrades, some existing features will also be updated, and Always On Display looks set to be one of them.

Android Pie to bring noticeable Always On Display updates

This revelation comes from an Android Pie hands-on video from the Galaxy Note 9, which you can check out below. Always On Display seems to be getting support for colored notification icons, with the app icons no longer sitting inside a circle. That should liven things up compared to the all white icons you have on AOD on Samsung devices right now. Another change is how the AOD time and icons aren’t in the center anymore. Last but not the least, Samsung seems to have updated the font with a Microsoft-ish look, something Windows users are likely to notice.

AOD is bound to get new clock styles as well with Android Pie, but it remains to be seen if everything we see in the early Pie builds will be available on the final update. Samsung is expected to launch an Android Pie beta program in the near future, and a lot may change in the months of testing that Samsung will carry out via the beta builds.
