Samsung to allow swapping Bixby in ‘Hi Bixby’ hotword with other words?

Now that we have the option to remap the dedicated Bixby key on our Galaxy phones, Samsung could be planning to give us the option to customize the ‘Hi Bixby’ wake-up command for Bixby Voice. Well, at least in China, where the company has apparently announced that Samsung will swap the Bixby in ‘Hi Bixby’ with a word of their choice.

There are no more details available yet, but Twitter leakster Ice universe says you could say ‘Hi IceCat’ instead of ‘Hi Bixby’, so we’re assuming users will a free hand at choosing any word they’d like. The ‘Hi’ part of the command will probably stay as it is, but letting people set up custom wake-up commands would take Bixby Voice a step ahead of Google Now. Google currently allows one to say ‘Hey Google’ or ‘Ok Google’ to use the Google Assistant.

It remains to be seen if the Bixby hotword customization will be come to devices other than the S10 and in countries outside China. If it does, what’s the word you’d use to access Bixby Voice? If you set it to ‘Hi SamMobile’ and give us some free publicity when you’re out and about in a crowd and need to ask Bixby something, we promise we won’t complain.

With Android Pie, Bixby Voice no longer needs a physical key

When the Galaxy Tab S4 went official, Samsung told us that the tablet would have support for Bixby Voice. That was well and good until we realized the Tab S4 had no physical Bixby key, which is required for Bixby Voice access on a Galaxy device. Samsung told us Bixby Voice would come with an update to the Tab S4 in 2019, and it turns out it’s the Android Pie update that the company was talking about.

Long press power key for Bixby Voice, double press for camera

On the new Galaxy A50, which comes with Pie out of the box, you can talk to Bixby by long pressing the power button to bring up Bixby Voice. It’s not enabled by default, but the phone asks you if you want to assign a long press of the power key to Bixby Voice the first time you access the power menu. A shortcut to Bixby gets added to the home screen so you can access the main Bixby app, and the phone also puts the power menu options in the status bar once you map Bixby Voice to the power button so you can restart/power off the device.

This is a good step towards making Bixby Voice more widely available across the Galaxy lineup, and it should help Samsung improve its voice assistant faster than it would have if only flagships and a few select mid-range devices would continue to get a dedicated physical key (which can be remapped on existing devices now). However, Samsung may not be putting Bixby Voice on every new phone that comes with Pie out of the box, as the Galaxy A30 doesn’t have it. It may have something to do with the device’s specs, but we can’t be sure at this point.

[Poll] A week later, what do you think about the Galaxy Fold?

It has been a week since Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold at its Unpacked event in San Francisco. The much-awaited device will go on sale on April 26 for $1,980 in select markets. So far, the company hasn’t allowed the press to play with the device, thereby leaving many questions unanswered. However, quite a bit of information about the Galaxy Fold has emerged online in the last few days, including a four-minute video from Samsung which gave us the closest look at the device so far.

Since the Galaxy Fold announcement, a lot has happened in the smartphone market. Companies like Huawei, Oppo, and TCL showed us their vision for foldable smartphones at the MWC. None of them, however, are going to hit the market anytime soon, leaving the Galaxy Fold as the only foldable smartphone that customers can actually buy. Taking all this into account, we are curious what our readers think about the Galaxy Fold a week after its announcement.

Vote in the poll below and then let us know more about your thoughts on the Galaxy Fold down in the comments section!

Samsung launches the Galaxy A10, A30, and A50 in India

After launching the online-exclusive Galaxy M series, Samsung is now focusing on the offline market in India by launching new Galaxy A series smartphones. In line with all the previous reports, the company has announced the Galaxy A10, A30, and A50 in the country today. Of these three models, the Galaxy A30 and A50 already made their debut at the MWC in Barcelona last week. While the three devices share many similarities with the recent Galaxy M models, they boast slightly different specifications and are priced comparatively higher to accommodate retailer margins.

Beginning with the Galaxy A10, it comes with 6.2-inch HD+ Infinity-V display, Exynos 7884 SoC, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 13MP rear camera, 5MP selfie, 3,400mAh battery, and Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top. It is priced at INR 8,490 (~$120) and will be available in red, blue, and black color options.

Samsung will be selling only the 4GB/64GB storage variant of the A30 in India. It will be available in the same colors as the A10 and carries a price tag of INR 16,990 (~$240).

Evident from the model number, the Galaxy A50 is the most premium and powerful of the three devices and is the first Samsung midranger to pack an in-display fingerprint reader. Other specs include a 6.4-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, triple cameras on the back, Exynos 9610 chipset, 4GB/6GB of RAM, 4,000mAh battery, and Android 9 Pie with One UI. It will be sold in white, blue, and black color options for INR 19,990 (~$280) for the 4GB/64GB variant and INR 22,990 (~$325) for the 6GB/64GB variant.

All the three models will be available for purchase in India, both in online and offline channels, from March 2 onwards.

Samsung brings Bixby key remapping to older flagships

We reported last week that Samsung had finally struck a compromise by allowing Galaxy S10 users to remap the Bixby key to launch a third-party app. Since this is a software feature, there was a possibility that Samsung would bring it to older devices.

It’s not waiting for the Galaxy S10 to come out to do that. Samsung has rolled out an update for the Bixby app today which allows users to remap the Bixby key on the Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S9/S9+ and the Galaxy S8/S8+.

Remap Bixby key on older flagships

Once the update is installed from the Galaxy Store, just go to Advanced features in the Settings app followed by Bixby key. You will be presented with two options. You can either set a third-party app to launch with a single or double press of the key.

The caveat here is that you can only select one option. So either a single or double press can be remapped, not both. The option you don’t select will continue to launch Bixby Home. A long press will always bring up Bixby Voice.

This compromise means that users don’t just disable the Bixby key entirely and never open Bixby Home. By allowing them to remap a key press, Samsung is ensuring that Bixby Home doesn’t get shut out by users for good.

You can try this out for yourself on the Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S8 series. We have and the feature works as expected.

Samsung releases Android Pie beta for Galaxy A6 (2018) in Korea

Now that Samsung has released the Android Pie update, either in beta or stable form, for its flagship devices, it is shifting its focus to bring the same to many of its newer midrange devices. Last week, the company kickstarted the Android Pie beta program for the Galaxy A7 (2018) users in India. It is now bringing the same update to the Galaxy A6 (2018) customers in Korea.

Predictably, the Pie update also brings Samsung’s new One UI to the A6. Unfortunately, from the screenshot we received, we can’t tell if the update also brings the latest February security to the device. You can read our posts about the Android Pie and One UI to know what the latest Android version update from Samsung brings to the table.

Unlike stable updates, beta software doesn’t roll out automatically to users and requires enrolling into a beta program. To do so (process may vary depending on the region), open the Samsung Members app and navigate to the Notices section. If the beta program is available for your device, you will see a notice for the same. Opening the notice provides a Register button to enroll in the beta program. Once successfully registered, launch the Settings app, open the Software update menu and then tap the Download updates manually option to receive the beta update.

Before enrolling into the beta program, it is worth remembering that beta software by nature may contain bugs and other issues which may impact your daily use of the device. It takes anywhere from weeks to months for the update to move from the beta to the stable channel.

Support page confirms approaching Samsung Galaxy A40 launch in Europe

Samsung has now announced the Galaxy A10, A30 and A50 in several countries, and shown of the latter two during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. But more models in the A series are nearing release, with the Galaxy A40 possibly leading the next wave of A series devices.

Galaxy A40 coming to Europe

On Samsung’s German website, the first Galaxy A40 support page confirms our earlier reports about the device coming to, amongst others, that country. Despite the fact its existence has been known for quite some time, not many details about the A40 have so far emerged. Aside from a handful of basic specifications – Exynos 7885, 4GB RAM, Android 9 – we do not know much about its display size, nor about the cameras, fingerprint sensor or battery.

samsung galaxy a40 support germany

One thing that the few known tidbits do make clear, is that the Galaxy A40 will sit just a step below the A50 in Samsung’s new mid-range line-up. Therefore, we do expect it to come with a European price tag that is even friendlier than that of the Galaxy A50 which will initially sell for €349.

Release-wise, we expect the Galaxy A40 to hit stores across Europe sometime this spring, possibly together with a few more phones in the same series. After all, we know the Galaxy A20 and A70, too, are on their way to various markets, as well as a Galaxy A90. It is safe to say Samsung is serious about its offensive to (re)conquer the globe’s affordable smartphone markets.

For now, do not forget to check out our hands-on preview of the already-launched Galaxy A30 and A50.

Galaxy A90 camera may have a sliding, rotating mechanism

Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy A series earlier this week. Only the A30 and A50 have been announced so far but there will be additional devices in the lineup which will come out down the line.

The Galaxy A90 is one such device. We have been hearing rumors about it for a few months now. Samsung is expected to go in a completely different direction for the camera. It would be in line with the company’s strategy to pack its midrangers full of technology.

Galaxy A90 camera to feature a sliding, rotating mechanism

A new rumor claims that the Galaxy A90 camera will be mounted on the slider and that it would be possible to rotate it. This would mean that the device won’t need separate cameras on the front and back. One camera system, be it dual or triple, would suffice.

There was a slightly different rumor with regards to this device’s camera three weeks ago. It claimed that the Galaxy A90 would have a pop-up camera with a no-notch display. The latest rumored system would allow for a display with no notches as well but the rotating mechanism is not something that is as yet a done deal.

We have already exclusively confirmed the color and storage details for the Galaxy A90. Additional details will emerge in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see how these camera-related rumors pan out. It’s safe to say that Samsung would be doing something unique with this device’s camera.

Samsung launches the Galaxy M30 in India

After the successful launch of the Galaxy M10 and M20 in India, Samsung is expanding its M series portfolio by launching the Galaxy M30 in the country. As the model number suggests, the M30 sits above the Galaxy M20 in Samsung’s new online-exclusive budget lineup. It boasts slightly better specs than the M20 and accordingly comes at a higher price as well.

The Galaxy M30 comes with a 6.4-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, Exynos 7904 SoC, a fingerprint reader on the back, 5,000mAh battery with support for fast charging, and Android 8.1 Oreo with Samsung Experience 9.5 UI on top. On the back, it sports a triple-camera setup with a 13-megapixel primary camera, 5-megapixel depth sensor, and a 5-megapixel wide-angle lens. There is also a 16-megapixel selfie camera with Live Focus support. The device will be available in 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB storage variants. As evident from the specs, the Galaxy M30 is essentially an M20 with a Super AMOLED display, more storage, and a triple-camera setup.

The Galaxy M30 will go on sale in India on Amazon.in and Samsung eStore at 12 PM IST on March 7. It will be available in Gradation Black and Gradation Blue color options. The base 4GB/64GB variant is priced at INR 14,990 (~$210), while the higher-end variant costs INR 17,990 (~$250). Those are extremely aggressive price points for what Samsung is offering and are bound to attract a lot of buyers in the world’s second largest smartphone market.

Samsung executive hypes Galaxy Fold’s UX and multitasking capabilities

After years of buildup, Samsung finally launched the much-awaited foldable smartphone, Galaxy Fold, at it its Unpacked event in San Francisco last week. Despite announcing the price and availability, the company, however, didn’t allow the press to play with the device to realize how it feels and works. As the curiosity about the device continues, the company has been posting bits and pieces of new information to keep the hype intact.

A few days back, the Korean company quietly released (now taken down) a four-minute video of the Galaxy Fold on its YouTube channel, giving us the most detailed look at the device so far. Continuing the hype, Samsung Newsroom has now posted an interview of Eui-suk Chung, Executive VP and Head of Software and AI at Samsung Mobile, where he talks about Galaxy Fold’s UX and multitasking capabilities. Frankly, nothing substantially new about the Galaxy Fold is mentioned in the interview, but there are some interesting bits about third-party app support for App Continuity and Multi-Active Window features.

To a question about if all apps support App Continuity and Multi-Active Window, the Samsung executive is rather cautious in his answer. While saying that the company has worked closely with Google and other partners, he added, “Support for App Continuity and Multi-Active Window will vary based on the application and the developer’s adherence with Google policies and guidelines.” From his statement, it appears some apps may support these features better than others.

Talking about the development of Galaxy Fold, Eui-suk Chung said that it took eight years for the company to turn the flexible display prototypes from 2011 into a meaningful product. He also said, with the introduction of the Galaxy Fold, ‘roll-able’ and ‘stretch-able’ device designs no longer seem impossible.

Galaxy Fold supports App Continuity and Multi-Active Window

The interview is accompanied by an illustration video where Samsung shows how the Galaxy Fold’s App Continuity and Multi-Active Window features work and how they are useful. The appeal of the Fold’s software is in, what Samsung calls, App Continuity. Simply put, App Continuity transfers an active app on the cover display to the main display when the Galaxy Fold is opened. Similarly, an active app on the main display transitions seamlessly to the cover display when the Fold is closed, enabling frictionless movement of activities from one display to the other.

Multi-Active Window, on the other hand, as the name suggests, allows Fold users to run up to three apps simultaneously on the main screen. That’s one app more than what’s currently allowed on Galaxy smartphones.

It is worth nothing Samsung is a bit ingenious when it comes to the cover display size in the video. The actual size of the outer display is smaller than what the video tries to portray.

Not all Galaxy S10 models will ship on March 8

Samsung has launched three different variants of a Galaxy S flagship for the first time. There are multiple configurations available for the handsets but not all of them will be available for purchase on March 8. That’s when pre-order customers start receiving their orders.

The same holds true for customers who have pre-ordered their Galaxy S10. Samsung won’t be shipping out all of the units on March 8 in the United States. Those who opted for certain models will have wait for a bit longer before Samsung sends them out.

Some Galaxy S10 models will be shipped later in the month

Samsung’s official US website mentions that the unlocked and carrier-locked variants of the 128GB Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ will ship between the week of March 15 and March 22, depending on the color chosen by the customer. This would mean that these models may not be readily available from stores come March 8 as well.

The models that will be immediately available on March 8 in the United States include the 512GB Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and the 1TB Galaxy S10+. Same goes for the Galaxy S10e, regardless of the color chosen. The staggered release for certain configurations will likely be seen in other markets as well. We already know that the Ceramic White finish won’t be shipped in the Netherlands before March 22.

It’s Official: You can now remap the Bixby key on the Galaxy S10+

The first software update for the Samsung Galaxy S10+, which will be waiting for customers to install as soon as they take their handset out of the box on March 8, introduces the option to remap the Bixby button to launch an aftermarket application or execute a Quick Command.

It also enables Instagram Mode.

Let’s talk remapping, and Instagram Mode

You can either choose to reconfigure the device to open an application on either a short or a double-press of the Bixby button, with the unassigned toggle reverting to pulling up Bixby Home. You can’t, however, alter the long-press function, which will continue to launch Bixby Voice.

The release also enables Instagram Mode, a unique tool that lets users capture and upload content to Instagram Stories from the handset’s native Camera client. The feature delivers the best Instagram experience, offering uploads in the highest supported resolution, according to Samsung’s DJ Koh.

As it stands, the number of people who are able to take advantage of the new additions is a smidgen compared to what it will be next month and that’s because the Galaxy S10+ is currently in the hands of a select few, ahead of its official release for the mass market on March 8.

Galaxy S10+ now receiving its first software update

Samsung has started rolling out its first software update for the Galaxy S10+, bundling a number of miscellaneous bug fixes and stability improvements, as well as the option to remap the Bixby button to launch any stock or aftermarket application — like Facebook, Google Maps, Instagram and Netflix.

The upgrade also includes the fixes for five critical and more than a dozen high-risk vulnerabilities in the Android OS, as well as twelve unique to Samsung’s own firmware — a couple of which have been classified as critical — as per this month’s routine Security Maintenance Release.

Here’s the full changelog:

  • The stability of Camera has been improved.
  • The performance of Fingerprint Recognition has been improved.
  • Added feature to set the application or function which runs when the Bixby key is pressed.

Right now, the number of devices the update has to reach will be somewhat marginal (in comparison to what Samsung will have to cope with next month) as it’s confined to a small selection of influencers, investors and media outlets, who were invited to use the handset ahead of its launch.

For that reason, those wanting to install the release shouldn’t have to wait too long. We received it one of our units in the Netherlands this morning, and there’s been some chatter of it reaching handsets in France and the United Kingdom since then, so it’s clearly making the rounds in Europe.

The one market it’s yet to reach, however, is the United States.

Samsung and Huawei settle patent infringement lawsuit

Samsung hasn’t just been competing with Huawei in the market. Both companies have been involved in legal battles since 2016 when they sued each other on allegations of patent infringement. Lawsuits were filed in the United States and China with Samsung contesting them in both markets.

The two companies have decided to settle their issue out of court, at least in the United States. A joint motion filed today confirms that Huawei and Samsung has entered into a settlement agreement this week.

Settlement agreement will be finalized over the next few weeks

The joint motion filed with the Federal Circuit seeks a stay on the appellate proceedings concerning Samsung’s antisuit injunction. A stay at this stage when only the appellate decision was left suggested one thing which was confirmed by the joint motion. Samsung and Huawei have entered into a settlement agreement.

“The parties entered into a settlement agreement and, pursuant to that agreement, they anticipate that in the next several weeks they will complete the pending steps to finalize the settlement and ultimately that Huawei will file an unopposed motion to dismiss this pending appeal within the next 30 days,” the joint motion states.

This case was filed in the United States back in 2016 and would have gone to trial in September. The jury would then have heard Samsung’s allegation of Huawei breaching its FRAND (“Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory”) licensing obligations. Both countries have been battling it out in the courts since then and have no appeared to make the wise decision of no longer wasting resources on this fight

It’s unclear what the terms of this settlement are. They might be made public in the coming weeks once they’re finalized. It’s good to see that Samsung and Huawei can see eye to eye on some matters.

Samsung’s doubling down on Bixby Voice at MWC 2019

Samsung has spared no expense to make sure Barcelona is aware that Bixby Voice can now understand Spanish, dotting several Hola Bixby Experience Stores around the capital, where MWC 2019 is currently underway — with the most notable situated opposite Apple’s flagship Passeig de Gràcia location, which has been closed for the last month for refurbishment.

The so-called Hola Bixby Experience Stores are decked out with Samsung’s latest devices, ranging from smart home accessories to smartphones, in a unique configuration that demonstrates how Bixby can be used at home, on the move and in the office. Customers also have the option to trial the tech for themselves, interacting with the assistant in their native language.

Samsung launched Bixby Voice for five new languages last week, including English (UK), French, German, Italian and of course Spanish. There’s one caveat, though: in order to use the feature, you’ll need to be using a Galaxy device that’s running Android 9 Pie. You’ll also need to have version 2.0.52.14 of Bixby installed, which can be done by following these steps.

If you’ve been following our MWC 2019 coverage, you’d know that the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy S10 are the stars of the show — the latter of which was available for manhandling at the Hola Bixby Experience Store I attended opposite Apple’s Passeig de Gràcia Store. Those wanting to see the Galaxy Fold in the flesh will, however, need to head over to the Fira de Barcelona.

Galaxy S10 will come with a built-in cryptocurrency wallet

As rumored and reported previously, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 lineup will come with a built-in cryptocurrency wallet called Samsung Blockchain KeyStore. It’s a cold storage wallet that can be used to store Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Cosmo Coin. The Korean company confirmed and elaborated about the wallet during the Samsung Mobile Business Summit at the ongoing MWC in Barcelona.

Along with the wallet, the company’s latest flagship also supports select Decentralized Apps (DApps). Cosmochain, a South Korean blockchain startup, will be Samsung’s initial DApp partner with its COSMEE DApp. COSMEE is a blockchain-powered beauty review app that rewards users with Cosmo coins for leaving beauty reviews in the app.  These coins can be transferred from COSMEE to Samsung’s crypto wallet directly.

While details are scarce, it appears partner DApps will be available for download from the Galaxy DApps page (tentative name) in the Galaxy Store. We currently don’t know if it is possible or Samsung intends to bring the wallet and DApps support to other Galaxy devices in the market. In the past, the company has ported new features from the latest Galaxy smartphones to older models if the hardware permitted. The same may be the case this time as well.

This is not the first time Samsung is dabbling in the crypto space. The company announced last year that its foundry business was making ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) chips for mining hardware companies. The Samsung Blockchain Keystore and DApps support, however, point to a more direct and consumer-facing play in the nascent industry.

Samsung says Galaxy Fold customers will get a ‘concierge-like service’

Samsung has been very light on the details about the Galaxy Fold so far. It only confirmed some of the specs at the launch event on February 20 apart from revealing when it will arrive and for how much.

It has now provided additional information about how the device is going to be sold and the premium aftercare that customers will receive. The Galaxy Fold will go on sale on April 26. It’s going to cost $1,980 and this new information helps put that price tag into context.

I wrote yesterday that Samsung allowed us to see the Galaxy Fold from a distance at its MWC 2019 booth but didn’t allow members of the press to go hands-on with the device. Hopefully, that’s going to change in early April.

Galaxy Fold will receive intensive aftercare from Samsung

Samsung UK’s director of product, services and commercial strategy Kate Beaumont has told The Verge that there’s going to be a press event for the Galaxy Fold “at the beginning of April.” Samsung will reveal more information about the device at this event and may ostensibly allow members of the press to experience the device for themselves. I say ostensibly because there’s no guarantee that it will be a press event in the conventional sense. Samsung may just reveal more information about the device through a press release.

Beaumont mentioned that there’s going to be less supply of the Galaxy Fold at launch than the company would have of a device like the Galaxy S10, and that “how it goes to market is really important to us.” Samsung Mobile boss DJ Koh has previously said that the company will produce one million units of the device initially and that production may be increased if the response is good. He has previously said that the foldable device will be released globally.

However, it may not be released like a conventional Samsung smartphone. Beaumont said that the device won’t be on display in all stores. “You’re not going to see it on the stands, we want to make sure it’s a very personal experience,” adding that “This is a super premium device, and we want to make sure it has a concierge-like service and experience.” No explanation has been offered about the concierge-like service but that will most likely come at the device’s press event. It will surely be interesting to see what this “intensive aftercare” will turn out to be.

What that means is customers won’t find the device at every retailer and carrier store. Samsung may only make the device available through select retailers and it’s possible that it may opt to sell the device through luxury department stores in some markets. That’s something that Apple did with the $10,000 Apple Watch Edition.

Vertu used to provide 24/7 concierge support to customers of its premium smartphones. Whether Samsung will be doing the same for Galaxy Fold customers remains to be seen. It may not offer that level of aftercare but it would certainly be more than what you get with any other Samsung phone.

Commenting on the design of the device, Beaumont said that Samsung considered a lot of options. The company feels like having the screen on the inside is the best way to protected that foldable display with respect to usability and durability. “We have the technology to do a fold that is very very tiny, as of course if you have the fold on the outside it doesn’t take quite the same amount of research and development to get that device to fold as it does something that is folding with a much lower angle degree on it,” Beaumont said, throwing some shade on the likes of Huawei, something we also explained in our opinion about the hype and reality of Huawei’s foldable phone vs the Galaxy Fold.

Swatch files complaint against Samsung for trademark infringements

According to Reuters, Swatch Group, the famous Swiss watchmaker which owns renowned brands like Longines, Omega, Swatch, Rado, and Tissot, has filed a complaint against Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electronics America in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York over trademark infringements.

Swatch alleges that downloadable watch faces available for the Gear Sport, Gear S3 Classic and Frontier smartwatches “bear identical or virtually identical marks” to its trademarks. The Swiss company is demanding a trial and seeking more than $100 million in damages. The company says it initiated the legal proceedings in the US since the allegedly infringed trademarks were registered there.

A known problem

Samsung smartwatch users can download thousands of watch faces from the Galaxy Store. Barring a handful, most of them are designed and sold by third-party developers. It is not immediately clear if the watch faces under contention are designed and published by Samsung themselves. Incidentally, we have reported in the past that many third-party watches faces available in Samsung’s app store blatantly copy iconic watch designs and yet pass the company’s store approval process.

“This unabashed copying of the Trademarks can have only one purpose – to trade off the fame, reputation, and goodwill of the Swatch Group Companies’ products and marks built painstakingly over decades,” the Swatch Group said in its complaint

“This is a blatant, wilful and international violation of our trademarks by Samsung,” a Swatch spokesperson told Reuters. “The affected brands are worth billions. Our claim for compensation? Triple digits in millions,” the representative added further. Samsung, on the other hand, declined to comment on the complaint.

Galaxy A10 render surfaces ahead of launch in India

Samsung will be launching the refreshed Galaxy A series on February 28 in India. The Galaxy A10, A30, and the A50 are expected to be launched initially in the country. Samsung has, in fact, already made the latter two official at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday. An image leak from a case maker has now revealed the render of the Galaxy A10.

Nothing to surprise here

The newly leaked Galaxy A10 render reveals a familiar design. The device features an Infinity-V display with a waterdrop notch, like the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20. The right hand panel of the device houses the power button and the volume control buttons. The bottom part has cutouts for the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB connector and a microphone. There’s also an opening for a second microphone at the top.

Speakers are placed at the bottom left of the back panel, similar to that of the Galaxy M10. Also, there’s no sign of a fingerprint sensor on this device as well. However, the Galaxy A10 gets only one camera at the back. The Galaxy M10 features a dual rear camera setup. Along with the 13MP primary sensor, it also gets a 5MP ultra-wide camera. The Galaxy A10, meanwhile, is expected to feature a 13MP lens at the back, and a 5MP snapper on the front.

As for other specs, a major leak earlier this month had revealed it all. The Galaxy A10 is powered by the Exynos 7884B SoC, coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space. It features a 6.2-inch Infinity-V HD+ display. Though the device misses on a fingerprint sensor, it is expected to come with face recognition.

As said earlier, the Galaxy A10 will be launched in India on February 28, so there are only two days to go. In the meantime, you may read our Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 hands-on.

Galaxy S10 brings a change to the camera’s Live Focus mode that I like

With great power comes great responsibility, and with more cameras on a flagship phone come new and improved features. Samsung talked all about the Galaxy S10 cameras at the official unveiling, focusing on the new ultra-wide camera joining the Dual Aperture and telephoto lens from the Galaxy S9. The ultra-wide camera enables pictures with a 23-degree field of view, and it changes a key element of the Live Focus mode that I am happy to see on the Galaxy S10.

I’ve loved having 2x zoom capability on Samsung’s flagship phones. But I’ve never liked the fact that in Live Focus mode, the camera zooms in on the subject. With dual camera setups that include a telephoto lens, the telephoto lens is the one used when you switch to Live Focus mode. The primary camera is tasked to capturing the background and the telephoto lens captures the subject in focus. Well, at least that’s my understanding of how dual cameras enable bokeh pictures, and it forces you to move back to maintain proper distance with the subject that you’re trying to capture more often than not.

Samsung’s mid-range and budget phones come with a dedicated depth sensor at the back instead of a telephoto lens, so there’s no zooming in involved on those, giving you more leeway to frame the subject as you see fit. And that’s the case on the Galaxy S10 as well, since Samsung is using the primary 12 MP sensor for capturing the subject on the S10 and the ultra-wide sensor for the background. This also allows the S10 to take slightly wider bokeh pictures and enables the Galaxy S10e to have Live Focus support as well.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether this change will make me use Live Focus more often. And based on my short time with the S10+, I’m not sure the overall quality of the bokeh pictures has improved. Our review units are running pre-release software, though, so I wouldn’t go so far as giving you a solid conclusion at the moment.

T-Mobile begins testing Android Pie for the Galaxy Note 9

T-Mobile has been rather late in releasing the Android Pie (One UI) update for the Galaxy Note 9. The carrier has only begun testing the Android Pie update for the device now. It is expected to roll out the update in the coming weeks, once testing is complete.

Sprint and AT&T have already rolled out the Android Pie update for the Galaxy Note 9. Verizon, meanwhile, remains mum on the matter.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 9 will get Android Pie soon

T-Mobile’s software update program consists of three stages: Development, Testing and Complete. Android Pie for the Galaxy Note 9 is currently in the testing stage. At this stage, the new software will go through tests to find and fix bugs and any final issues before it can be declared complete. Once the software is approved to be bug-free, it will be rolled out for consumers, so Galaxy Note 9 users on T-Mobile can expect the Android Pie update anytime soon.

T-Mobile has already released the update for the Galaxy S9 and S9+. The carrier has the Galaxy S8, S8+, S8 Active, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy J7 Star, and the Galaxy A6 currently listed under the development stage. Testing for these devices should begin once the update is released for the Galaxy Note 9.
