As rumored and reported previously, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 lineup will come with a built-in cryptocurrency wallet called Samsung Blockchain KeyStore. It’s a cold storage wallet that can be used to store Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Cosmo Coin. The Korean company confirmed and elaborated about the wallet during the Samsung Mobile Business Summit at the ongoing MWC in Barcelona.
Along with the wallet, the company’s latest flagship also supports select Decentralized Apps (DApps). Cosmochain, a South Korean blockchain startup, will be Samsung’s initial DApp partner with its COSMEE DApp. COSMEE is a blockchain-powered beauty review app that rewards users with Cosmo coins for leaving beauty reviews in the app. These coins can be transferred from COSMEE to Samsung’s crypto wallet directly.
DApps coming to the Galaxy Store?
While details are scarce, it appears partner DApps will be available for download from the Galaxy DApps page (tentative name) in the Galaxy Store. We currently don’t know if it is possible or Samsung intends to bring the wallet and DApps support to other Galaxy devices in the market. In the past, the company has ported new features from the latest Galaxy smartphones to older models if the hardware permitted. The same may be the case this time as well.
This is not the first time Samsung is dabbling in the crypto space. The company announced last year that its foundry business was making ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) chips for mining hardware companies. The Samsung Blockchain Keystore and DApps support, however, point to a more direct and consumer-facing play in the nascent industry.
