Galaxy Note 20 could feature ‘fine-tuned’ 120Hz refresh rate technology

Samsung is yet to launch the Galaxy S20 series, but rumors related to the next Galaxy Note have started swirling already. We know that all of the features introduced with the Galaxy S20 series should make it to the Galaxy Note 20, but it’s the screen refresh rate technology that could see an improvement.

According to reputed leakster Ice Universe, Samsung will use a “more fine-tuned 120Hz refresh rate technology” on the Galaxy Note 20. While this statement is a bit ambiguous, we derive a few possibilities. First and foremost, it could be a case of the South Korean smartphone giant enabling 120Hz screen refresh rate feature even with QHD+ resolution, something that’s not possible on the Galaxy S20 series. This could make the S Pen feel faster and smoother.

The second possibility, and a distant second at that, could be the South Korean firm using variable refresh rate technology. This is something that we generally see on gaming PCs and gaming monitors. If this feature makes it to the Galaxy Note 20, it could be the first phone in the world to have a screen with a variable refresh rate. Only the newer iPad Pro tablets use a similar feature, which Apple calls ProMotion technology.

Right now, there are only a handful of smartphones that come with screens that have a 120Hz refresh rate. The two smartphones from Razer were the first ones with 120Hz refresh rate screens. The ASUS ROG Phone II was the first phone with an AMOLED screen and a 120Hz refresh rate. The POCO X2 and the Xiaomi Redmi K30 also have 120Hz LCD screens. The upcoming Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra will be the first Samsung phones to have a refresh rate higher than 60Hz.
