Samsung has captured a major lead over the competition in the foldables segment by launching its second foldable device, the Galaxy Z Flip. The Z Flip isn’t just a foldable phone with a flip phone form factor, it’s a foldable phone with an amazing trick up its sleeve: The display on this phone can open up at many angles instead of just snapping fully open and fully shut.
Earlier today, Samsung published highlights of the Unpacked 2020 event, and part of those highlights is a GIF that perfectly encapsulates how useful the Galaxy Z Flip’s ability to stay open at an angle can be. The GIF shows one of Samsung’s presenters plopping the phone down with the screen open at a 90-degree angle, moving away from it, and then using the palm gesture to take a selfie.
When the Z Flip is opened this way, it goes into what Samsung calls Flex mode, and as seen in the GIF, the top half of the screen acts as the viewfinder while the bottom half holds all the camera controls. The bottom half can also be used to browse through photos in the gallery, and since Flex mode was designed in partnership with Google, a lot more apps could be taking advantage of the feature in the near future.
Check out the GIF below, and don’t forget to read our hands-on review to find out how Samsung has outdone itself with this device.
