The Galaxy S20 is the first smartphone on the market capable of recording 8K videos. It’s a feature that Samsung probably would have introduced last year with the Galaxy S10 if it didn’t use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip in some markets, because while the Exynos 9810 was capable of recording 8K videos, the Snapdragon 855 wasn’t.
The Exynos and Snapdragon chips that power the Galaxy S20 don’t have that disparity, making 8K video recording possible on Samsung’s latest flagship. However, while 8K recording sounds great on paper, it isn’t something most would consider using in real life. Enjoying 8K videos to the fullest requires an 8K display, but 8K TVs still cost an arm and leg, putting them out of reach for many consumers.
8K videos also take up a lot of storage space, and 8K recording is limited to a measly 24 frames per second on the Galaxy S20 lineup, so they don’t look as smooth as videos shot at 4K and Full HD resolutions (which go up to 60 fps). That said, having the ability to record such high-resolution videos is better than not having it, and some Galaxy S20 owners — especially those who have an 8K TV at home — no doubt like having the choice.
And in our latest poll, we want to know which side of the isle do you stand. Do you record 8K videos on your Galaxy S20, S20+, or S20 Ultra, or do you stick to 4K or Full HD videos? Vote in the poll below, then share your thoughts down in the comments!
