The Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition is Samsung’s second device to carry the fashion house’s brand, and it might not be the last given its apparent success. It’s the product of an unusual collaboration between two very different companies: a technology giant and a fashion designer, but it’s their similarities that made the device possible in the first place. More specifically, although the two companies have very different backgrounds, they were brought together by their obsession with precision, revealed lead designer Henry Hongmin Kim in a recent interview.
The worlds of tech and fashion can vary widely in terms of design approaches, materials and manufacturing processes, said Henry Hongmin Kim during the interview, so it was very important for Samsung and Thom Browne to work together to understand these differences before setting out to design the first limited edition device, i.e., the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition. Many departments have worked together to deepen this understanding when creating the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition, and despite their different design philosophies, the two companies have found common ground in their pursuit for precision.
Creating a brand-new identity
Although Samsung and Thom Browne are fundamentally different, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is their common ground as the device is essentially a fashion statement in itself. It’s unlike any other device on the market, and much like Thom Browne, it stands out in the crowd. According to Henry Hongmin Kim, combining the two entities together led to the creation of a brand-new identity that’s just as much a fusion of fashion of technology as it is a combination of past, present and future.
In more practical terms, Samsung enhanced the brand’s signature Americana striping through an innovative technique that makes it seem as if it has a fabric texture. Pretty much every part of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition package carries the signature striping – from the charger to the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Buds Live – and the device also features a new lock screen, a Thom Browne theme, and two dedicated photo filters.
When asked who’s the target audience for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition, the lead designer revealed that it’s for anyone who wants to enjoy an all-new mobile experience which combines the best of the worlds of technology and fashion. And of course, although this wasn’t outright mentioned in the interview, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition is obviously for anyone who’s willing to spend $3,299 for this sense of exclusivity.
