Samsung could divide the Snapdragon and Exynos-powered Galaxy S22 variants unlike it did in previous years. For the US market, for example, a new rumor suggests that every Galaxy S22 variant will be powered by the Snapdragon 898 SoC, except for one.
While the Galaxy S22 series will reportedly employ the Snapdragon 898 chipset in the US, Verizon may have fixed its eyes on the Exynos 2200 chipset instead. According to @FrontTron, citing Clien, Verizon has requested the Exynos-powered Galaxy S22 models from Samsung, and the two companies are now negotiating.
Why would Verizon want the international Galaxy S22 configuration?
Verizon might prefer the Exynos 2200 chipset over the Snapdragon 898 solution because it might be looking for a better deal with Samsung, or it might want to avoid any supply constraints that could be caused by the global semiconductor shortage and the higher demand for Qualcomm’s solution. Or perhaps the Exynos 2200 will be superior to the Snapdragon 898, and Verizon wants to offer the better alternative come January 2022.
Whatever the case may be, Samsung fans don’t usually ask for Exynos chipsets inside their flagship phones. It’s usually the other way around, which is why customers in India are surprised that they might finally be getting the Snapdragon version next year. However, customers in the USA might not want to give up on the tried and tested Snapdragon family of chipsets in favor of an Exynos SoC, so Verizon customers might not be too happy if this rumor comes to pass.
Thankfully, even if Samsung and Verizon strike a deal around the Exynos-powered Galaxy S22 series, it’s not like every customer in the USA will be forced to buy this variant. The Snapdragon 898 Galaxy S22 model should still be sold by all other retail channels and network providers aside from Verizon. More importantly, we just don’t know yet if the Exynos 2200 will really be superior to the Snapdragon 898 SoC. The rumored AMD GPU might give it an edge, but time will tell.
