The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are the world’s first foldable smartphones with a water-resistant design. Both smartphones also feature stronger and more durable hinges and an Armor Aluminum frame. The South Korean firm is trying to make sure that durability-related doubts don’t get in the way of consumers who are thinking of buying the new Galaxy Z series devices.
Now, Samsung has published a new video that shows how it tests the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 for long-term durability. The company said that it had to develop new ways to test foldable devices since there is no industry-wide blueprint available right now. The phones go through various stages of durability testing, including environmental chamber, water resistance, S Pen usability, and folding test.
The environmental chamber test checks whether the phones can do basic tasks such as video playback and web browsing in various climates (cold, dry, hot, and humid). The water-resistance test checks whether the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 can withstand being submerged in water in various folding positions.
The S Pen drawing test, which includes a robotic hand, ensures the durability of the digitizer that is placed below the foldable display. It also checks whether the S Pen works on the crease and edges of the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s foldable display. To make sure that its foldable phones live up to 200,000 folds (good enough for 100 folds a day for up to five years), the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 go through a dedicated folding test.
