Sprint sends out Stagefright vulnerability fix for a handful of Samsung devices

A recently discovered Android vulnerability called Stagefright has got carriers and manufacturers rushing to push fixes for their Android devices. The vulnerability can allow hackers to remotely gain access to a target’s device by simply sending a MMS message with malicious code, Android automatically processes such videos and thus the code runs without even needing the user to open that MMS message. Google has already sent out a fix and Sprint was among the very first carriers in the United States to roll it out for the Galaxy Note 4. Today it’s sending out the same fix for Stagefright vulnerability to a handful of Samsung devices.

Sprint has released the update carrying version number G900PVPU3BOG1 for the Galaxy S5, G920PVPU2BOGA for the Galaxy S6, G925PVPU2BOGA for the Galaxy S6 edge and N915PVPU4COG1 for the Galaxy Note Edge. The official changelog for all updates mention that it only brings a Google Security Patch that’s intended to fix the Stagefright vulnerability. Other carriers in the US are yet to roll out this important update for Android devices on their network but it shouldn’t be long before they get to work as well.

T-Mobile discounts the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge by up to $200

After reporting its quarterly earnings last week Samsung announced that it will be adjusting prices of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge to maintain sales momentum, it has decided to cut prices as it gears up to launch the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+. It appears that T-Mobile is the first carrier in the United States that’s passing on those savings to customers by discounting both flagship handsets by as much as $200.

T-Mobile is now offering both 32GB and 64GB models of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge for $100 less, this means that customers can pick up the 32GB Galaxy S6 for just $579 and the S6 edge for $679. The carrier has also reduced the price by $200 for 128GB models of both handsets so the Galaxy S6 edge with 128GB storage can now be purchased for $759. The Galaxy S6 with 128GB internal storage is now available for just $659. It’s a great time to purchase these handsets from T-Mobile particularly if you’ve been on the fence because you didn’t want to pay more for extra storage. It’s unclear when other US carriers will follow suit.

Leak shows the Galaxy Note 5 in the flesh

Well, it looks like someone might just have spoiled the party for Samsung by leaking pictures of a Galaxy Note 5 in the flesh. Published by Droid-Life, the images seem to come from someone who got to spend hands-on time with the phablet, and show a device that looks exactly the same as the Note 5 we purportedly saw in a leaked render earlier this month.

The first thing you will notice is the slight curve on the back, which should help with ergonomics while making the handset look good from the rear at the same time. The front is, for all intents and purposes, an enlarged Galaxy S6 with slightly lesser curves on the edges. Also notable is what looks like the new Air Command menu, with the option of custom shortcuts in addition to usual S Pen features. The bottom of the device has the same setup as the Galaxy S6, but with a push-to-eject S Pen slot placed next to the speaker.

The phone in the pictures doesn’t seem to include an IR blaster, and it would be sad to see Samsung removing the feature considering it can come in quite handy sometimes. Of course, there’s no telling if what we’re looking at is actually the Note 5, or at least a final retail version of the phablet. All will be revealed in a couple of days at Samsung’s Unpacked event next week, where the company will also unveil the Galaxy S6 edge+.

Dual-SIM variant of Samsung Galaxy Note 5 certified in Malaysia

The Galaxy Note 5 will be officially revealed by Samsung very soon, but its specifications, hardware as well as some of its software features have been leaked already. Now, a dual-SIM variant of the upcoming high-end phablet has been spotted online.

A variant of the Galaxy Note 5 will most probably be launched with two SIM slots in markets like China, Russia, and Malaysia, just like it did with the Galaxy Note 4 Duos. The Galaxy Note 5 Duos (SM-N9208) has appeared through Malaysian wireless certification agency SIRIM, and it looks like it is compatible with four 2G bands, two 3G bands, and four LTE bands.

As previously reported, the Galaxy Note 5 will most likely feature a 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, S Pen, Exynos 7420, 4GB RAM, 32/64/128GB of internal storage space, 16-megapixel primary camera, 5-megapixel secondary camera, and a 3,000 mAh battery.

Samsung Pay on TV heralds payment system on Samsung devices

Samsung Pay has been said to arrive this year on the company’s latest devices, and it’s highly likely we’ll see the mobile payment system announced with the upcoming Galaxy Note 5/Galaxy S6 edge+ announcement. While we’re waiting for Samsung’s most prestigious announcement of the year, however, the Korean manufacturer has decided to roll out a payment feature for the company’s own Smart TV lineup.

Dubbed “Samsung Pay on TV,” the new feature allows Smart TV customers to pay for their purchases by way of a debit or credit card or PayPal account using a four-digit PIN. If your credit card or debit card information is already connected with your Samsung account, a simple log-in will take care of the need to enter your information; if not, you’ll be allowed to enter it by way of Samsung’s new virtual Secure Keyboard.

At this point, there are only a few games available for purchase via the new TV payment method, such as Eternal Warrior 3, Frontline Commando: DDAY, and Casino Golf Championship, and Samsung Pay on TV is only available for certain 2014 and 2015 Smart TVs in 32 countries. With next week’s mobile payment announcement, however, and the convenience of using the company’s Galaxy smartphones as TV remotes, Samsung Pay on TV looks to get even smarter in the coming days.

Why do you hate the Galaxy Note 4 so much, Samsung?

The Galaxy E series started getting an update to Android 5.1.1 today. Android 5.1.1 – that’s the latest available version of the OS from Google, and it’s currently making its way to one of Samsung’s cheapest smartphone lineups. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge have already gotten the update since they are the company’s current flagships, but once again, Galaxy Note 4 owners find themselves waiting endlessly for what is a very minor but important update.

Why is Android 5.1.1 minor yet still important? Well, it’s because while 5.1.1 may not have much in the way of new features, it fixes most of Lollipop’s memory leak issues and also improves general performance. You would think that seven months into 2015 the Note 4 would be running the latest and greatest version of Android, but like the initial Lollipop update, the phablet is once again waiting for an update that is already making its way to devices that are priced much lower.

At this point, we can’t help but wonder if Samsung shouldn’t just be reimbursing everyone who bought a Galaxy Note 4, considering how the device has been so poorly supported by the company. We’re guessing that with the Galaxy Note 5 on the horizon, the Note 4 might see even more neglect in terms of software support, and we can only hope Samsung doesn’t treat any of its future flagships as badly as it has the fourth-generation Galaxy Note.
