Samsung releases more details about its 7nm and 10nm chip manufacturing processes

Samsung has been making great strides in chip manufacturing technology. It was one of the first to manufacture 14nm chipsets for mobile devices, and now company has released more details about its upcoming 7nm and 10nm fabrication processes. It has also announced future roadmaps for the existing 14nm and 28nm processes.

Samsung claims that it fully intends to deploy extreme UV (EUV) to mass produce 7nm chips. This is significant since even experts were unsure about the necessity of EUV in the 7nm fabrication process. However, Samsung said that using EUV is imperative to keep production costs under check. That’s because the alternative, triple patterning process, is significantly more expensive than EUV.

On 10nm side of things, Samsung said that it would be an improvement over the existing 14nm process, in addition to providing improved performance and possibly reducing cost as well. The company recently announced that it will start manufacturing second-generation 10nm chips this year. The 10LPE (Low Power Early) process will be followed by 10LPP (Low Power Plus), which is expected to provide 10-percent performance improvement. More importantly, a chip design done in 10LPE could easily be ported to 10LPP process.

Samsung seems to be doing well with 14nm process with its fab plants in Korea and Texas running at full steam, shipping 0.5 million wafers to date. The plant is currently taking orders from the likes of Qualcomm and AMD to manufacture chips based on the company’s second generation 14nm FinFET process.

The company is doing great on the foundry side while being aggressive on the R&D front, but it needs to be seen whether its processes are as good as Intel’s or TSMC’s. A recent study showed that Apple’s A9 chipsets manufactured by TSMC’s 16nm process had better performance and power efficiency than those made by Samsung’s 14nm process.

Silver Galaxy S7 and S7 edge will be available in the Netherlands from next month

Samsung released the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge in a variety of colors but not all of them were initially made available in all markets. The new flagships are available in silver, black and gold colors. Samsung didn’t offer the silver color option to customers in the Netherlands initially but it’s going to do that starting next month.

Orders can be placed right now for delivery in the first week of next month. Online retailers in the Netherlands have now listed the silver Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge with a delivery date of May 2nd. Samsung also announced a new pink gold color option for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge recently but it’s not widely available just yet, it could bring the pink gold option to other markets at some point down the line.

Rumor: Galaxy Note 6 could feature a 5.8-inch curved display 4000 mAh battery

While we still can’t believe the rumors about the Galaxy Note 6 making an official appearance as early as July, Samsung seems to be extremely busy with its next flagship as details on the device just keep on making their way online. We had heard that the Galaxy Note 6 could feature a 5.8-inch ‘Slim RGB’ display, and a new leak is supporting the increased screen size today. According to the folks over at GSM Helpdesk, Samsung is currently toying with both a flat and a curved display for the next Note flagship (with both displays featuring Quad HD resolution).

The curved display is said to be of the same size, which doesn’t come as a surprise as even a 0.1-inch increase in display size is something Samsung has taken a long time to do. The source of the information says the Korean giant will only be launching a single device as a successor to the Note 5 and S6 edge+ from last year but is currently undecided on which version it will bring to market. A curved model does seem highly plausible, as Samsung wouldn’t mind pushing a form factor it has so beautifully perfected with the Galaxy S7 edge.

The other interesting tidbit in this leak is the battery size of the Note 6. The source doesn’t exactly know the battery capacity but suggests a 4,000 mAh battery might power the device. With a larger body, it wouldn’t exactly be hard to fit in a 4,000 mAh battery inside the Note 6, especially if Samsung makes the device thicker than its predecessor (a move that helped the company fit the large batteries inside the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge).

The Note 6 should also come with improved camera software while keeping the same camera hardware as the S7 family, 6GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage, according to the leak. The prototypes being tested are said to be powered by the Exynos 8890 and Snapdragon 823 chipsets and running Android N, which reiterates what we have heard previously. An iris scanner isn’t confirmed at this point.

As usual, there’s no telling if the leaked information is totally accurate, as Samsung could change things up in the coming months as development goes on. The Note 6 is certainly shaping up to be a major upgrade based on all the rumors, and we should be seeing more details cropping up in the near future.

First hints of Marshmallow update for Galaxy A5 (2016) and A7 (2016) appear

Though we have always assumed Samsung will provide Android Marshmallow updates for all Galaxy A (2016) devices, there was no concrete evidence pointing in that direction. Now, certifications provide just that. Over at the Wi-Fi Alliance, Samsung had several regional versions of the Galaxy A5 (2016) and Galaxy A7 (2016) certified running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, giving us a first glimpse of the existence of the upcoming update.

Other than the certification for the 2016 generation of the A5 and A7, no other Galaxy A devices have been spotted running Android Marshmallow so far. However, we do expect to see the A3 (2016) and A9 in the waiting line soon as well. As far as predictions about the actual rollout of the Marshmallow update for the Galaxy A (2016) devices are concerned, we can’t provide you with any concrete date. Sometimes, updates start weeks after renewed Wi-Fi certifications are published, but knowing Samsung it could easily take longer than that. Still, at least we now have concrete proof that the update coming.

[Update: Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge too!] Galaxy S6 edge now receiving April security update in Europe

Earlier this week, AT&T distributed this month’s security maintenance update to all its variants of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the United States, and now Samsung is in the process of rolling out an identical upgrade to the factory unlocked model of the Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925F) in Europe.

What’s interesting about this release is that Samsung has included the same palm rejection enhancements targeted at reducing the number of false touches processed on the Galaxy S7 edge. One of my only issues with the Galaxy S6 edge was that it was too easy to accidentally open applications when your hand’s wrapped around the curved display, so it’s nice to see the company finally address this issue.

To see if the upgrade is ready for your phone, simply head into Settings, followed by About Device, locate and select Software Update, then hit the Update Now button.

Update: Since writing, it has been confirmed that Samsung is also pushing out the April security patch for both the European variants of the Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) and Galaxy S6 edge+ (SM-G928F). All of the firmware details can be seen below:
