Galaxy S21 European release date leaks, implying the obvious

The apparent European release date for the Galaxy S21 series leaked earlier today – with some obvious implications to boot. More specifically, it seems Samsung’s next flagship line will be hitting the Old Continent on January 29th. This availability date has already been mentioned on several occasions since November.

And after today’s leak that specifically references Europe, it seems pretty clear that Samsung will be targeting a global release with the Galaxy S21 range. On one hand, that’s hardly a surprise, given the company’s track record. And yet it also wasn’t a certainty in a world still burdened by a major pandemic.

Will an early release boost Galaxy S21 sales?

What today’s leak doesn’t reveal is whether Europeans will have more than a week to pre-order a Galaxy S21-series device. But according to one recent report, Samsung isn’t planning on giving us too much time to make a pre-purchase decision this time around. Whether this ends up impacting the lineup’s sales remains to be seen, and the same goes for this earlier-than-usual launch window.

Pre-order bonuses are still expected to vary by country. Previous rumors suggested these goodies will vary from complimentary S Pens to even a free pair of the Galaxy Buds Pro. In other words, expect up to the equivalent of €160 worth of extra incentives to pre-order one of the upcoming smartphones.

As a reminder, Samsung’s newest mobile lineup will consist of the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra. And we pretty much already know what to expect from all three flagships. Including the high likelihood that Samsung will finally be lowering the series’ entry point, following years of price hikes. As a result, the Galaxy S21 range could be its cheapest flagship family in years.

Samsung’s next-gen Digital Cockpit for smart cars has giant screens everywhere

Samsung has showcased its next-generation Digital Cockpit for connected cars. Powered by Harman’s automotive technology, Digital Cockpit 2021 comes with multiple screens inside and outside the car. It also features 5G connectivity, enhanced safety, and a comfortable user experience.

The company wants connected cars not to be limited to just transportation but to become comfortable daily living spaces for everyone. The giant dashboard display inside the car is powered by a QLED panel, while an OLED panel powers the center console. There is also a display outside the car (on the front grille) that shows alerts to pedestrians, and it is powered by a MicroLED panel.

A dedicated media mode reveals the full screen on the dashboard and ingresses the steering wheel. In the Gaming Mode, two stereo speakers are retracted from the seat’s headrest to offer an immersive audio experience. There is even a Creator Studio that offers a quick way to edit photos and videos while on the go. An additional large-sized screen on the rear seat can switch between landscape and portrait modes. Passengers can connect to that screen via their Galaxy smartphones or tablets using Wireless DeX to turn it into a mobile workstation.

Samsung’s Digital Cockpit 2021 uses four 360-degree cameras outside the car to recognize nearby vehicles and pedestrians. It uses a deep learning algorithm to show additional statistics and alerts while driving the car. The next-gen Digital Cockpit also features Samsung Health, which syncs with the Galaxy Watch to show a driver’s energy, emotional, and stress levels via heartbeat information. When the driver seems fatigued, the connected car advises the driver to take a break and have some rest.

When pedestrians are detected in front of the car, it notifies them via audio and visual alerts using speakers and the outside screen. Even the rear-view mirror’s functionality is carried out by a floating screen on the top of the windshield. That screen also displays various driving and weather-related information as well as notifications from the phone. Other information, such as local news and sports scores, can also be viewed.

The hardware that runs the Digital Cockpit 2021 system can run Android and Linux OS simultaneously. And all of this is powered by Samsung’s Exynos Auto V9 processor, which features a built-in 5G (sub-6GHz and mmWave) modem, GPS, Wi-Fi connectivity. It uses Qualcomm’s 5G modem and beamforming antennas for faster internet speeds even when the vehicle is on the move at high speeds.

The company didn’t reveal when we could see actual cars that are powered by the Digital Cockpit 2021. Samsung wants automotive technologies to become a future growth engine for the company.

Galaxy S10 One UI 3.0 beta users just got… another beta update

Here’s an odd one for the books: After releasing the stable Android 11 and One UI 3.0 update for Galaxy S10 owners on Android 10/One UI 2.5, Samsung has pushed out a new One UI 3.0 beta to those who were part of the beta program instead of providing them with the stable firmware as one would expect.

And the new beta update fixes a series of pretty serious issues, such as the fingerprint sensor not working properly and device resets when using streaming services. It makes us wonder if that stable firmware released recently is really as stable as it should be. Of course, it’s also possible that a different team is handling beta development, though it’s not something we have seen happen before with any previous beta programs.

Still, beta users should see the stable update arrive on their handsets sometime before the month is over, or at least that is what we hope. For now, if you’re running the beta version of One UI 3.0 on your Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, or Galaxy S10+, you should be able to download the new update (software version ZTLJ) from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu while keeping your fingers crossed that you won’t be running unfinished software for too long.

Samsung India to offer free premium case to those who pre-reserve Galaxy S21

Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy S21 series on January 14, but the company has already started accepting pre-reservations for its upcoming flagship smartphones in various markets. The company has now announced that it will offer freebies to those who pre-reserve the Galaxy S21 in India.

The South Korean firm has made it official that it has started accepting Galaxy S21 pre-reservations in India. Interested consumers can pay INR 2,000 (around $27) via Samsung India’s website to reserve their “next Galaxy smartphone” and to get the ‘Next Galaxy VIP Pass.’ Once the phone goes on pre-order in the country, INR 2,000 will be deducted from the phone’s price while making the purchase. Customers will also get a free premium case worth INR 3,849 along with the smartphone. Although, it is not clear which case it would be.

Apart from being among the first consumers to get their hands on the Galaxy S21 in the country, those who pre-order the upcoming flagship devices can also expect to get the Galaxy Buds Live (Galaxy Buds Pro for Galaxy S21 Ultra) and the Galaxy Smart Tag for free.

Galaxy A32 5G and Galaxy A52 5G coming to AT&T, T-Mobile in the US

5G is going to be a lot more accessible this year thanks to Samsung, with the Korean giant making 5G variants of many of its more affordable Galaxy A series phones, such as the Galaxy A32, Galaxy A42 and Galaxy A52. The Galaxy A42 5G went official last year, and in the near future, we expect Samsung to take the wraps off the A32 5G and A52 5G. And today, we’ve learned that both the Galaxy A32 5G and the Galaxy A52 5G are on their way to North America.

T-Mobile and AT&T will carry the two 5G phones whenever they go official, though the US launch could happen a few weeks after the international debut, as is often the case for Samsung’s A series phones. The LTE variants will probably not be sold stateside, which would put the A32 and A52 in the same league as Samsung’s flagships. Both the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 lineups were launched only in 5G variants in the US, and we should see the same trend across most of Samsung’s smartphone repertoire going forward.

What specs can you expect from the Galaxy A32 5G and Galaxy A52 5G?

As for specs, the Galaxy A32 5G will naturally be the lower-end option. It is expected to feature a 6.5-inch Infinity-V display, the MediaTek Dimensity 720 processor, at least 4GB of RAM, a 48MP quad-camera setup, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and 15W fast charging (battery size is currently unknown). The A52 5G will have the Snapdragon 750G SoC (720G on the LTE variant), up to 8GB of RAM, a 64MP quad-camera setup at the back, and a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with an integrated fingerprint sensor.

The A52 5G might have only 15W fast charging support as the Galaxy A50 and A51, which is bound to upset some fans. However, it will be quite up-to-date on the software side of things as it will run Android 11 and One UI 3.0 out of the box. The Galaxy A32 5G will be running the latest software as well. It remains to be seen how many Android OS upgrades the two handsets will receive, but we can expect at least the A52 to get three of them before Samsung downgrades support to just providing security updates.

New Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 is the first to feature a QLED display

Samsung today unveiled the new Galaxy Chromebook 2. The company has been a major player in the Chromebook market since 2011. Its latest model is perhaps one of its best. It builds upon the premium experience offered by the first Galaxy Chromebook to offer a unique selling point.

The Galaxy Chromebook 2 is the world’s first Chromebook to feature a QLED display. We’ve seen this incredible display technology on many of Samsung’s products before. This is the first time that the company is bringing it to Chromebooks.

Samsung elevates Chromebooks with its QLED display technology

Powered by Google’s Chrome OS, the 2-in-1 Galaxy Chromebook 2 seamlessly integrates with both Galaxy and Google ecosystems. Google Assistant is built-in so users can accomplish a lot without even having to lift a finger. The new Chromebook works very well with Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem as well. It connects seamlessly with other Samsung devices to enable you to make calls and send messages from your phone, tablet or laptop.

The biggest selling point of the Galaxy Chromebook 2 is its 13.3-inch QLED 1920×1080 pixel resolution touchscreen display. Any Univeral Stylus Initiative (USI) pen can be used on this display for drawing or scribbling. Samsung has also added a new lattice keyboard that has wider keycaps and bright backlighting to improve the typing experience.

There’s a 10th Gen Intel Core i3-10110U or Intel Celeron 5205U processor under the hood with up to 8GB of RAM, the configuration will vary by market. The new Chromebook will be available in 64GB and 128GB storage options with microSD support.

Chromebooks have long been regarded as work devices. The QLED display makes the Galaxy Chromebook 2 more suitable for entertainment as well, making it a viable option for a wider base of customers. To further drive this point home, Samsung has added 5W x 2 stereo speakers to the device with Smart AMP. It runs up to 178% louder than the average amplifier to provide an immerse audio experience.

Connectivity options include ultra-fast Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth v5.0. A 45.5Wh battery promises to provide all-day battery life. The Galaxy Chromebook 2 measures just 13.9mm thick. It will be available in Fiesta Red and Mercury Gray finishes. Pricing and availability information has not yet been confirmed.

[List] Galaxy devices that have received Android 11/One UI 3.0 update

Only four months after officially announcing the One UI 3.0 update, Samsung already brought its custom Android 11 implementation to quite a few of its Galaxy devices. At least compared to the pace of its Android 10-based One UI 2.x deployment efforts which have been ongoing until this very month. And assuming we’re counting Android 11 beta builds, which we are.

As Samsung is expected to begin ramping up the development and release of various One UI 3.0 iterations, this is a fine time for us to start keeping detailed tabs on that endeavor. This would primarily constitute tracking the exact lineups and models that have already been updated, as well as the order in which that happened.

We will be updating this list on a regular basis, so feel free to bookmark it if you’re eager to embrace Samsung’s latest mobile OS ASAP. Our definition of that term is about to change soon, anyway, seeing how the One UI 3.1 update is right around the corner.

In case your device isn’t on the following list just yet, here is when you can expect the Android 11 party to start on your end. Keep in mind that releases usually take at least several weeks before going fully global, with the possible exception of Samsung’s foldable smartphones.

With that said, you can download the latest system images from our firmware archives almost as soon as Samsung makes them available.
