Samsung planning to go hyperlocal to boost online sales in India

India is the second biggest smartphone market in the world, and Samsung wants to go big in the country. However, there’s a price difference between online and offline retailers which leads to confusion among consumers. Also, offline retailers have started to lose business as they can’t offer prices as low as some online retailers like Amazon and Flipkart. To solve this problem, Samsung is planning to go hyperlocal.

According to a report by The Economic Times, “Samsung is localising e-commerce order delivery, installation and even collection of payment for cash-on-delivery orders through authorised distributors and dealers who will be market specific.” The South Korean electronics giant currently sells its products in India through WS Retail on Flipkart and Cloudtail through Amazon, but after a recent regulatory change Samsung has to change its system.

As per the new regulation put forward by the Indian government, no single vendor can contribute to more than 25 percent of the sales on an e-commerce marketplace. Samsung can have more control over online sales of its products by letting its own dealers handle sales and deliveries. The company is now working with Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal to list its local (offline) sellers on the e-commerce platforms. Online orders will then be redirected to the closest brand store based on the pin code.

This move by Samsung seems interesting, but it remains to be seen how the company manages to serve after sales service. Rahul Saigal, MD at digital marketing consultancy Netimpact Solutions, said, “While there may be potential advantages for consumers such as installation, but the real test will be in service delivery and post-delivery issues for which the e-commerce sellers have already built their name.”

Samsung launched certain devices including the Gear S2, the Gear VR, and the Galaxy On series of smartphones exclusively through e-retailers, and the decision might have annoyed regular brick-and-mortar store owners. It will be interesting to see how Samsung manages to satisfy customers, online retailers, and offline retailers in the coming months with its new plan.

At present, the Galaxy A (2016) series is only available to purchase in a small number of Asian and European countries. However, recent speculation suggests that the South Korean company is preparing to bring the devices to additional markets in the not-too-distant future.

Samsung will be making 2nd-generation 10nm chips this year

Samsung has said that later this year it’s going to start producing 2nd-generation 10-nanometer chips. The company is said to have met with major chipmakers in Silicon Valley to push its advanced manufacturing and fabrication technologies. It announced plans to deploy new 14-nanometer and 10-nanometer processes.  Kelvin Low, senior director at Samsung Semiconductor, said: “We think we are leading again, this is not a one-time success story.”

With its new manufacturing and fabrication technologies, Samsung might be looking to regain a major share of orders for iOS devices. Its 2nd-generation 10-nanometer process could be of interest to Apple and it could go with Samsung as a supplier for future devices. Ever since Apple brought on TSMC as a supplier it has taken away a good chunk of the business that Samsung previously had. It won the contract to fabricate majority of the A8 processors that power the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and share manufacturing responsibilities with Samsung for the A9 processor. Rumors suggest that TSMC is going to be responsible for the bulk of orders for Apple’s next-generation A10 processor so Samsung will really need to pull something out of its hat to win back a big chunk of Apple’s business.

Samsung looks to sell coated NAND flash memory to Apple

Samsung is already part of Apple’s supply chain but it appears that the company wants to do more business with its rival. According to a new report Samsung wants to sell Apple coated NAND flash memory that’s protected against electromagnetic interference or EMI. Samsung is said to be working with a company called Protec to coat NAND flash memory modules so that Apple’s EMI shielding standards are met.

Electromagnetic interference is a big problem because space inside smartphones is shrinking as they’re getting thinner with each generation. This means that some components inside the phone are placed on top of each other and this can cause EMI. To mitigate this problem Apple is demanding that its suppliers use enough coating to prevent any EMI issues during the life of the device. The report says that Samsung will have the coated NAND modules available in quantity by early next year. Apple’s current flash memory supplier SK Hynix is also reportedly working on coated NAND modules so when the time comes for Apple to pick a supplier it might come down to whoever offers the best quality for the best price.
