Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ official with 5.7-inch displays, 4GB RAM, and Android 5.1

The day we have all been waiting for is finally here. Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, two phablets that will handle the role of the company’s late 2015 flagships in different regions. Naturally, the Galaxy Note 5 is the more important device here, as the Galaxy S6 edge+ is simply a blown-up version of the Galaxy S6 edge. Both devices share similar specs for the most part, with the Note 5′s claim to fame being the S Pen stylus and the S6 edge+ boasting a dual-edge display.

The two smartphones follow Samsung’s new design philosophy that combines glass and metal for a beautiful and premium look and feel, and the Note 5 also introduces a new design element that should help in handling. Those curves on the front of the S6 edge+? The Note 5 has similar curves on the back side that make it feel solid in the hand and prevent it from slipping out too easily. The Super AMOLED displays on both devices measure 5.7-inches in size and have a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, and the processing power is provided by the Exynos 7420 CPU.

The Exynos 7420 is clocked at 2.1GHz for the Cortex-A57 cores and 1.5GHz for the Cortex-A53 cores, and users now get 4GB of RAM for their multitasking needs. Imaging is handled by a 16-megapixel rear camera with f1.9 aperture and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, a setup that is carried over from the Galaxy S6 lineup. Storage options are 32 and 64GB; a 128GB model is missing, but we’re guessing that’s not a bad thing as 128GB models can be rather costly and aren’t usually manufactured in high quantity.

On the connectivity front, you get support for Cat 9/6 LTE (based on region), along with Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and a microUSB 2.0 port. The battery is a 3,000 mAh unit on both phones; yep, it’s worrying that the batteries aren’t too big, but Samsung says that in addition to quick charging through a USB cable, the phones also charge quickly on a wireless charging pad, in 120 minutes to be precise. The dimensions of the Note 5 come in at 153.2×6.1×7.6 mm with a weight of 171 grams, while the Edge+ is 154.4×75.8×9.153 mm and weights 153 grams.

Samsung Pay is also making its debut on these two flagships, with a launch in Korea on the release date of the devices and then in the US in September. Of course, the Galaxy Note 5′s S Pen can’t be left unmentioned. This time around, the stylus looks and feels more like a traditional pen, and it’s also easier to remove thanks to the new push-to-eject mechanism. As for the software, we get Android 5.1 Lollipop with the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UX, including features like live YouTube broadcasting, quick camera launch by double pressing the home button, and more.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ will go on sale globally this month in Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum and other colors, though availability will fully expand in September. The same goes for the Galaxy Note 5, though unlike the curvy S6 edge+, the Note 5 won’t be available globally and will be limited to select markets. We aren’t sure what these markets are, but we will be sure to update you with all the information as and when we get it.

What do you think about Samsung’s new (literally) big things? Let us know in the comments, and hang in there for our hands-on experience with both the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+.
