Since there’s an increase in the demand for flexible OLED displays in the smartphone market, Samsung wants to fully capitalise on it. According to Business Korea, Samsung Display has started investing to increase flexible OLED production lines at its existing plant in Tangjeong in South Chungcheong Province.
According to various industry sources, Samsung Display has started making the second investment in its existing flexible OLED manufacturing lines, and has already placed an order for production facilities worth 400 billion won ($325.73 million) with ten OLED equipment producers.
The production capability is expected to be doubled from current 15,000 units to over 30,000 units after the completion of this expansion, and it would become the company’s largest flexible OLED production base. The new production lines are likely to start operation early next year.
Industry insiders believe that Samsung Display has made this investment to meet the supply of flexible OLED panels for Apple’s iPhone 8. Apple is said to be co-operating in research with Samsung Display, Japan Display Inc. (JDI), and LG Display.
