It was first reported several months ago that Samsung is going to introduce a new artificial intelligence virtual personal assistant called Bixby with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. Since then we’ve seen enough circumstantial evidence to support the theory that this assistant will be onboard the new flagship smartphone when it arrives in a couple of months.
Samsung has now filed for a trademark in Europe for “Bixby Reminder,” which suggests that this is going to be one of the many features that the assistant offers. It has previously trademarked features like Bixby Pay and Bixby Vision. While the trademark filing doesn’t reveal much about this feature the brand name itself is quite self-explanatory. It suggests that Bixby will be able to handle users’ calendar appointments via voice commands as well.
Previous reports have suggested that Bixby is going to be much more capable than the likes of Siri and Cortana but it remains to be seen just to what extent that’s going to be true, particularly when you consider a recent report which suggested that Bixby is actually going to be based on Samsung’s S Voice and not on the technology that the company got as part of its acquisition of Viv Labs, an AI company run by the creators of Siri.
