Telus, one of the largest mobile carriers in Canada, has released a new software update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Aside from bug fixes and network enhancements, the update also brings support for the carrier’s quad-band LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) service. The service is going to provide significantly faster mobile data speeds to the carrier’s subscribers.
Samsung’s new flagship smartphone has a gigabit LTE chip so it can theoretically hit gigabit speeds as well but it going to be a while before data networks hit gigabit speeds for the public. LTE-A is the next best thing now and Telus subscribers can expect to hit theoretical download speeds of up to 750 Megabits per second.
A representative for Telus pointed out in a statement that Telus is “the first network in North America capable of delivering quad-band LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) service on the Samsung Galaxy S8.” In real world scenarios, the carrier’s subscribers will see speeds between 22 to 174Mbps.
It’s not the only carrier in Canada with a quad-band LTE-A service. Bell has also confirmed support for quad-band LTE-A, however, it hasn’t released a software update at this point in time which enables the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to tap into the faster data network.
