After Samsung announced that it would spend close to $12 billion to increase the product of NAND chips, Apple has reportedly turned to the South Korean semiconductor giant for the provision of storage chips for its upcoming iPhones. According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple’s original suppliers for 3D NAND chips for the iPhone 8 as well as the iPhone 7s duo – SK Hynix and Toshiba – have a combined shortfall of 30 percent.
Samsung is currently the largest producer of NAND chips in the world, and can easily provide Apple with the remaining chips for upcoming iPhones. The US-based tech giant is expected to ship 224 million iPhones (including 50 to 60 million iPhone 8 units) in 2017. Apart from the rumored bezel-less iPhone 8, the company also plans to sell the iPhone 7s and the iPhone 7s Plus. We’re not sure whether all the iPhones would use these chips or just the iPhone 8.
Neither of the companies has provided an official statement about this deal, so it’s not confirmed at this point in time. Samsung recently expanded 64-layer 256GB V-NAND technology to all its NAND products. While the iPhone 7 uses 48-layer NAND chips for storage, the iPhone 8 is expected to use even better 64-layer NAND chips. However, the report states that SK Hynix plans to supply 72-layer NAND chips for iPhones.
