We exclusively revealed a month ago that Samsung is working on a new version of the Galaxy S20 that’s going to take over the Galaxy S Lite lineup. The handset is being developed under model number SM-G780 (Global) and SM-G781 (US). Samsung is referred to this device as the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition internally.
There was some confusion about its specs initially, particularly about the chipset it would end up using. The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition has now surfaced on Geekbench where it has revealed its Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset.
Galaxy S20 Fan Edition will be paired with the SD865
It’s not surprising to see that Samsung is going to utilize the Snapdragon 865 for this watered-down Galaxy S20. The SD865 is a bonafide flagship processor, in case you forgot, it’s the one that powers the Galaxy S20 lineup in select markets.
Hopefully, Samsung would do what it did with the Galaxy S10 Lite and not split the device in Snapdragon/Exynos variants. The Galaxy S10 Lite was shipped with the Snapdragon 855 globally and we can hope that the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition will do the same with the SD865. The geekbench listing for the SM-G781B reveals the Snapdragon 865 chipset paired with 6GB of RAM. The device posted single-core and multi-core scores of 737 and 2619 respectively.
It’s unclear as yet when Samsung is planning to launch the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition. We may not see it for a couple of months as the company’s release schedule is pretty packed as it is. It’s launching the Galaxy Note series, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and new wearable devices in the comings. The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition may only be launched once it’s done with all of that.
