A cheaper Galaxy Z Flip 3 is expected to be just the tip of the iceberg that is Samsung’s foldable smartphone strategy for 2021. New industry insight suggests the Seoul-based tech giant has all but finalized its foldable device roadmap for the next 12 months. Furthermore, its home country of South Korea is likely to remain the largest foldable handset market in the world come next year.
That’s all according to the latest industry report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). The consultancy group that accurately predicted the display specifications of several Samsung flagships released this year shared its latest insight at a recently concluded virtual conference for corporate clients.
Will Samsung finally launch a sub-$1,000 foldable smartphone in 2021?
The key part of the DSCC’s latest prediction has to do with Samsung’s foldable smartphone family going into 2021. Namely, the firm seems convinced Samsung will introduce another form factor to the Galaxy Z series at some point next year. That’s in addition to launching sequels to both the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G as the chaebol apparently isn’t convinced it found the ideal use of flexible displays just yet. Of course, not everyone agrees with that notion.
These third-generation foldable smartphones are also said to be more affordable than their direct predecessors. As for the third, novel addition to the Galaxy Z family, DSCC said a device with a rollable display may be on the cards. We recently caught a possible glimpse of one such device, though previous reports indicated Samsung is pursuing a smartphone with a stretchable screen instead of a rollable one.
Either way, expect the entirety of Samsung’s Galaxy Z lineup to get slimmer, lighter, and even more bezel-less over the course of 2021. The way things stand right now, we also wouldn’t discount the possibility of Samsung finally launching a sub-$1,000 foldable smartphone by this time next year.
