Samsung is the world’s leading Android smartphone vendor. All of the companies that compete in this industry have their sights on Samsung’s lead. They want to catch up and eventually pass the Korean giant. Huawei came close to it before its legal troubles sent it tumbling back down.
It appears that others have now started to realize that they need an edge if they wish to better compete against Samsung. They feel that making their own chips for flagship phones might be the best way to go about it.
Oppo wants to make its own chips for flagship phones
The Nikkei is reporting that Oppo, a leading Chinese smartphone manufacturer, is now developing chips for its flagship smartphones. It plans to use its own mobile SoCs in flagship phones due in 2023 or 2024, depending on how quickly it can get done with the in-house chip development. Oppo is also the world’s fourth largest smartphone vendor by volume.
The report adds that Oppo wants to use TSMC’s 3nm process technology. It will join the likes of Intel and Apple who already have plans to utilize this advanced technology to make chips. Oppo has steadily been investing in its chip program. It has hired the top developers and AI experts from Qualcomm, Huawei and MediaTek. The company has previously used Snapdragon chipsets for its flagship phones.
Oppo will join the likes of Samsung, Huawei and Apple in making its own chips for flagship smartphones. Google has recently joined that club as well with its Tensor SoC for the new Pixel 6 series.
It’s also pertinent to note that Oppo shares its supply chain with several brands that include OnePlus, Vivo and Realme. There’s no reason why its in-house chips shouldn’t find their way into those devices as well. That will only increase competition for Samsung in the market.
