Samsung reportedly abandons plan to revolutionize the smart TV remote

A new report claims that Samsung has abandoned a plan internally known as “Perfect Experience” or PX and laid off dozens of employees that were associated with it, many of those employees had joined Samsung after its acquisition of smart TV startup Boxee two years ago. Multiple sources cited in the report claim that ex-Boxee CEO Avner Ronen, who later became the VP of product for Samsung, has also departed the company. The PX project was in development for over two years with an aim to revolutionize the smart TV remote, it was being built by the Boxee team which initially got a lot of resources from Samsung that it was able to increase its headcount from 40 to almost 100 employees.

PX revolved around a dedicated media tablet that would have replaced the traditional remote for smart TVs, this tablet would have provided users with a unified guide of live TV listings as well as streaming content through a custom UI that would not have looked similar to conventional tablet UIs, according to Variety. Samsung was reportedly looking to partner with streaming services and pay-TV service operators in the United States to bring their content and apps to this tablet but apparently they weren’t willing to play ball. The company would have bundled the tablet with its high-end TVs in the US, it was actually expected to do this with the 2015 smart TV lineup unveiled at CES 2015 in January but the project was reportedly not completed at that time and Samsung was forced to delay it to late 2015 before it was further postponed to 2016.

Samsung was not only planning to replace traditional remote controls, it also wanted to revolutionize the way consumers watch and discover content using smart TVs. The report claims that PX had significant internal pressure as well since the project was “highly controversial” and faced a lot resistance from the company’s Korean executives who were apparently not happy about a product being developed out of their reach in the United States. The tension between Samsung’s US and Korean executives has been chronicled in detail before, it has not always been a smooth relationship. While the real reason behind PX’s death might never been officially confirmed one can only imagine how Samsung’s vision for smart TV remotes of the future might have been perceived by the public. Guess we’ll never know.

Stagefright fix for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 released by AT&T

It was only a matter of time before other US carriers followed Sprint’s lead and released the critical Stagefright vulnerability fix for Android devices. Sprint was first carrier to send out this patch for the Galaxy Note 4 and earlier today it released the same update for more Samsung devices. AT&T has followed suit by rolling out over-the-air updates for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 Active, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 Active and the Galaxy Note 4.

The update being rolled out by AT&T doesn’t bring anything other than the “device security enhancement” which ensures that the aforementioned handsets are no longer susceptible to the Stagefright vulnerability. Hackers can use this vulnerability to remotely gain access to a target’s device, steal their data and even commandeer the microphone and camera. The Stagefright scare has forced Samsung to rethink its software update policy, Samsung now promises to release security related updates for its devices at least once per month.

Samsung preparing itself to beef up mobile RAM production

Samsung is one of the largest manufacturers of DRAM chips in the world with a marketshare of 44.1 percent, but due to declining PC sales, the company seems to be adapting to the new market. According to industry insiders, the company is making preparations to increase the production of its mobile RAM chips.

Korea Herald is reporting that Samsung is cutting down the production of PC DRAM chips by 30 percent and diverting its resources in the production of mobile RAM chips. Sources suggest that the South Korean semiconductor giant is gearing up for the mass production of RAM chips that will be used in Apple’s next iPhone, along with other components including the smartphone’s storage and SoC chips.

We cannot give details on the reduction of the production. However, it is right to say we are seeking to expand sales of high-end products, such as mobile and server DRAMs.

– Samsung

Looking at the company’s earnings report from the past few quarters, it is evident that Samsung has failed to improve its smartphone business, so it is becoming increasingly reliant on its semiconductor business to boost revenue and profits. Samsung’s semiconductor division posted an improved operating profit of KRW 3.4 trillion ($2.92 billion) in Q2 2015, while the chaebol’s  smartphone business stayed flat with an operating profit of KRW 2.76 trillion ($2.36 billion).

Samsung’s new update process will push Android security fixes OTA once per month

Samsung today announced that it’s going to implement a new Android security update process which gives priority to security patches, it will send out fixes over-the-air when security vulnerabilities are discovered, these security updates will be sent out regularly about once per month. The company says that it fast tracked security updates for Galaxy devices following the recent Android Stagefright scare, it acknowledges the importance of time in addressing such major vulnerabilities and promises to further develop this process so that timely security updates become a normal practice.

Dong Jin Koh, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Research and Development Office, IT & Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics said:

With the recent security issues, we have been rethinking the approach to getting security updates to our devices in a more timely manner. Since software is constantly exploited in new ways, developing a fast response process to deliver security patches to our devices is critical to keep them protected. We believe that this new process will vastly improve the security of our devices and will aim to provide the best mobile experience possible for our users.

Samsung is in talks with its carrier partners across the globe to implement its new approach to security updates, the company says that it will provide more information about specific models and timelines in the near future.

Samsung will reportedly supply AMOLED displays to Huawei

A report out of Korea claims that Samsung is looking to diversify the customer base of its display business, Samsung Display is reportedly looking to provide AMOLED displays to Huawei. Currently majority of the AMOLED panels that Samsung Display manufactures are used in the company’s own devices which means that the display business partly relies on the performance of the mobile business to thrive.

The report claims that Samsung Display has started sending samples of AMOLED panels to Huawei and it’s expected that shipment numbers will increase in the coming months. Samsung Display already does business with some Chinese manufacturers like Oppo and Vivo but a partnership of this sort with Huawei will be much more significant primarily because Huawei is the world’s third largest smartphone vendor. Rumor has it that the Samsung-made AMOLED display could find its way to Huawei’s Nexus smartphone which is believed to have a 5.7-inch AMOLED display with 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution. It’s not like Samsung doesn’t have a history of providing components to rival manufacturers but the question remains whether the company will have any qualms about providing its latest display technology to Huawei. Since the company hasn’t officially commented on this matter we’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out.
