Samsung publishes introduction videos of its latest products

Samsung introduced many new products at its Unpacked event in San Francisco yesterday. The list includes the endlessly-leaked Galaxy S10 lineup, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Fit bands, and the most awaited of all – Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s foldable smartphone. The Korean company has now published detailed introduction videos for some of these products.

The Galaxy S10 video, as to be expected, talks about the design, Dynamic AMOLED displays, camera capabilities, in-display fingerprint reader, Wireless PowerShare, Wi-Fi 6, 5G, One UI, and other features of the lineup. You can also read our coverage of the Galaxy S10 to learn about some of these features.

The Galaxy Watch Active video is all about fitness tracking capabilities of the device. It doesn’t talk much about the design of the watch even though that is what primarily separates it from the rest of the offerings in the Samsung’s smartwatch lineup. Recharging the device through the Wireless PowerShare feature in the Galaxy S10 is also mentioned prominently in the video.

The Galaxy Buds video focuses on the convenience offered by the latest wireless earbuds from Samsung. It tries to drive home the point that these are designed not just for listening to music, but also for clear voice interactions with the outside world, enabled by the dual mics and other noise-controlling features onboard. Once again, Galaxy S10’s Wireless PowerShare feature makes an appearance, touting the never-before convenience of recharging Galaxy Buds instantly anywhere.

Despite announcing the release date and price, the company is still not comfortable in revealing more details about the Galaxy Fold. The company hasn’t published any introduction video for its foldable smartphone yet, only a TV commercial. Even the press was not given any hands-on time with the device yesterday. We may have to wait a little longer to learn more about the future of the Galaxy.

Galaxy S10 pre-order period kicks off in India on February 22

Indian retailer Flipkart has revealed that it will start taking preorders for the Galaxy S10 in the country starting 10 AM tomorrow, February 22. Flipkart is likely to be the exclusive online retailer for the Galaxy S10 in India, as it has had the honor for previous flagships including the Galaxy S9 and S9+. Of course, Samsung’s official online store will take pre-orders as well.

Flipkart isn’t offering any more details yet, such as the general release date, but Samsung’s official site suggests that all three Galaxy S10 models will come to India. Whether the ceramic variants of the Galaxy S10+ will also be sold in India remains to be seen. Samsung’s pricing for its flagships in India has been quite attractive in recent years thanks to the fact that the company manufactures its devices locally in the country, and we’re likely to see the S10e, S10, and S10+ getting the same treatment.

Galaxy S10+ preorders will come with an exclusive Fortnite skin

Samsung was the exclusive launch partner for Fortnite on Android. The company offered free V-bucks and ran Fortnite-focused marketing campaigns to sell the Galaxy Note 9 as the ultimate gaming smartphone. As part of the collaboration, Samsung users also received an exclusive Galaxy Skin for their Fortnite characters.

Samsung seems to be continuing its partnership with Epic Games, maker of Fortnite, for the Galaxy S10 as well. Customers who preorder the Galaxy S10+ will receive an exclusive K-pop-themed Fortnite skin modeled after Jung Chan-woo or Chan from South Korean band iKon. Interestingly, the offer is applicable only for the Galaxy S10+ preorders, signaling Samsung’s positioning of the larger variant as the best in the S10 lineup for gaming.

Unlocking the Galaxy Skin required downloading the game from the Galaxy Store, creating or logging in to an Epic Games account, and completing specific in-game tasks such as three games of Battle Royale. We don’t know the exact process for unlocking the new K-pop skin, but it should be pretty similar to the Galaxy Skin.

Popular Fortnite player Ninja and the K-pop group iKon will be hosting an event on March 16 where we can expect more information about the new skin and other Fortnite promotions for the Galaxy S10. While it may not make any sense to preorder the Galaxy S10+ only for the skin, Samsung is also offering a free pair of Galaxy Buds in select markets to sweeten the deal.

Galaxy S10e vs Galaxy S10 vs Galaxy S10+ specs comparison

For the first time ever, Samsung is launching three different variants of its newest flagship. Well, the company has launched new variants of some of its flagships before, but those usually came a few months apart. The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ are the three Galaxy S10 models that will go on sale, offering different screen sizes, battery capacity, and other specs.

The Galaxy S10e is the entry-level model here, as it comes with considerably lower specs in some departments. It doesn’t get a curved display, only has two rear cameras instead of one, and doesn’t get an in-display fingerprint sensor, either. The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+, meanwhile, are similar to each other in most respects. The S10+ gets dual front cameras, bigger battery and screens, an option of 12GB RAM and 1TB internal storage, and a ceramic back, but that’s about it.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active hands-on: One UI in, bezel ring out

The Galaxy Watch Active is part of the new lineup of wearable devices that Samsung launched yesterday. Is it a successor to the Gear Sport or an entirely new smartwatch generation from Samsung? That depends on the way you look at it, but for us, it appears to be a mix of the two. It’s not a bad mix by any stretch of the imagination. Read our Galaxy Watch Active hands-on to find out more about our thoughts on the new smartwatch.

Design

Our first impressions of the Galaxy Watch Active are that it has a streamlined look. Samsung has made subtle but meaningful changes to the design for a simpler appearance. It does retain the same circular design of its predecessors but ditches the rotating bezel. Samsung set its smartwatches apart with the rotating bezel but it has decided to remove it from the Galaxy Watch Active. We’re not too thrilled about this move, but does that make the Galaxy Watch Active any less of a smartwatch? Absolutely not.

Ditching the fluted rotating bezel meant that the smartwatch could have a smooth design. It has gentle curves not unlike those on the Apple Watch. Sure, the Apple Watch isn’t circular, but the curves do allow for a smooth glass look. That’s what you get on the Galaxy Watch Active and it looks better on it due to the circular design. We do feel that the bezel could have been a bit smaller. As such, it would be better to not use a colorful watch face on this device. You’d get the best look from the Galaxy Watch Active if you opt for a darker watch face instead.

Interface

The Galaxy Watch Active brings One UI to Samsung’s smartwatches and a slightly new user interface since it doesn’t have a rotating bezel ring. That design element was used for navigation and since it’s not present, Samsung obviously had to make changes to the interface. That being said, you wouldn’t feel lost if you’re used to the old interface. Much of it still looks the same even though there are new animations and icons. The overall functionality remains the same and works as expected.

Since the Galaxy Watch Active is geared towards users who live an active lifestyle, the new animations are meant to get users to be more active in their daily lives. We find that they work as intended. There are also new watch faces like we see on every new smartwatch from Samsung. The health tracking features allow for sleep and stress tracking in addition to blood pressure monitoring. The new Daily Activity Tracker widget will ensure that users stay on top of their fitness goals. The smartwatch can also send users a Heart Rate Alert if it detects that they have an abnormally high resting heart rate. That’s a very useful feature to have on the device.

Conclusion

Despite not being that different compared to the Galaxy Sport as far as the size is concerned, the Galaxy Watch Active does feel like a serious new product. The swiping interface and seamless look make it stand out sufficiently enough. We do feel that this has the potential to be a hit for Samsung. We’re also exciting in seeing Samsung bring this new user interface to existing smartwatches.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e hands-on: An affordable AMOLED display tablet

Samsung has had a good run with tablets. It’s currently the market leader for Android tablets amid an overall contraction in the tablet market. We went hands-on with the Galaxy Tab S5e at Samsung’s Unpacked event yesterday and here are our first impressions of the new ultra-thin tablet.

Design

As we’ve pointed out earlier, the Galaxy Tab S5e is an incredibly thin tablet. It measures 5.5mm and weighs just 400g. You can feel how sleek and ultra-portable it is by holding the tablet in your hand. It gives you the feeling that you can probably just fold it, that’s how thin it feels in the hand. We had a similar thought about the Galaxy Tab S2 when it came out a few years ago. This is thinner and lighter than that tablet.

This slim figure wasn’t achieved without a casualty. Samsung made a polarizing decision to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack from this tablet. Some might feel it’s about time the company did this while others would say it should have kept the jack. Regardless of which camp you’re in, you’ll get a dongle in the box so you can use your headphones with the USB Type-C port. Or you could just opt for wireless earphones; Samsung launched the new Galaxy Buds just yesterday.

There are no other significant changes on the design front. The Galaxy Tab S5e has a rear camera without flash and a front camera. The buttons are where you’d expect them on the sides. Samsung did integrate a fingerprint sensor in the lock button which works pretty well. There are some downsides, though. The Galaxy Tab S5e isn’t part of the Galaxy Foundation. What that means is that it doesn’t have an IP6x resistance rating. But we can’t fault the 10.5-inch OLED display, particularly when it’s being offered at this very attractive price tag.

Software

Samsung will ship the Galaxy Tab S5e with Android 9.0 and One UI 1.1. It’s great to see that Samsung is bringing its new UI to tablets as well. We’re holding out on hope that the company will roll out One UI for existing tablets as well. One UI 1.1 brings Samsung’s iteration of the Digital Wellbeing features that Google introduced with Android 9.0. We found in our brief time with the device that the features work as intended. Other than that, it’s business as usual on the software front. One UI really does make the system look very nice and the overall software experience felt stable as well.

Conclusion

Our conclusion after the hands-on is that this is a really awesome tablet even though it may not appear to be special on paper. It’s very thin and light for a tablet with a 10.5-inch OLED display. That’s what makes it an incredible package when you consider the fact that you get a tablet with an OLED display for just over 400 euro. OLED tablets were never this cheap before.

Galaxy S10 Wireless PowerShare requires at least 30% battery capacity

We had heard about the Galaxy S10 Wireless PowerShare feature long before it was officially announced yesterday. It’s a reverse wireless charging feature which lets you charge any Qi-enabled phone or device using your Galaxy S10’s battery. This will be great for when you’re in a pinch and need enough power to get you through the next few hours.

What the feature does is essentially turn your Galaxy S10 into a wireless charging mat. The charging functionality isn’t just limited to smartphones. You can even charge the Qi wireless charging enabled Galaxy Buds by placing them on the back of your Galaxy S10. This feature is present on all models of the Galaxy S10.

Galaxy S10 Wireless PowerShare has a capacity threshold

You obviously need ample power on the source device in order to charge another device. We found in our testing that Samsung has set a capacity threshold for the Galaxy S10 Wireless PowerShare feature. You will not be able to use your Galaxy S10 to charge another device if it doesn’t have at least 30 percent battery capacity. So if you’re at 29 percent, you won’t be able to use Wireless PowerShare. Your device will first prompt you to “Charge the battery to at least 30% to share power.”

When you do have ample charge on the Galaxy S10, simply open the notification shade and tap on the Wireless PowerShare button to activate the feature. Line up the second device with the Galaxy S10 and it starts charging instantly. It’s not fast charging by any stretch of the imagination but does get the job done. Do keep in mind that the feature may not work properly if either device has a case or cover installed. Once you’re done charging, just expand the persistent Wireless PowerShare notification and tap on Turn off.

You’ll obviously drain the Galaxy S10’s battery faster when using it to charge another device. Expect to lose about 25 percent of the battery per hour on average but the actual mileage may be different depending on several factors.
