Samsung Display invests $325.73 million to increase the production of flexible OLED display panels

Since there’s an increase in the demand for flexible OLED displays in the smartphone market, Samsung wants to fully capitalise on it. According to Business Korea, Samsung Display has started investing to increase flexible OLED production lines at its existing plant in Tangjeong in South Chungcheong Province.

According to various industry sources, Samsung Display has started making the second investment in its existing flexible OLED manufacturing lines, and has already placed an order for production facilities worth 400 billion won ($325.73 million) with ten OLED equipment producers.

The production capability is expected to be doubled from current 15,000 units to over 30,000 units after the completion of this expansion, and it would become the company’s largest flexible OLED production base. The new production lines are likely to start operation early next year.

Industry insiders believe that Samsung Display has made this investment to meet the supply of flexible OLED panels for Apple’s iPhone 8. Apple is said to be co-operating in research with Samsung Display, Japan Display Inc. (JDI), and LG Display.

Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016) photos emerge through TENAA

The Galaxy J5 (2016) and the Galaxy J7 (2016) have been certified by TENAA, China’s telecom equipment certification authority. Both devices look largely similar to their predecessors, the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7. These mid-range smartphones run Android 5.1 Lollipop as of now, but the new Galaxy J7 was spotted with Android 6.0.1 before so this might change in the future. Metal frames could also be present on the new phones (suggested by the cuts for the antennas at the front of the devices), which have only been seen on Samsung’s flagship smartphones and the Galaxy A lineup until now.

The 7.9mm thin Galaxy J5 (2016) features a 5.2-inch 720p AMOLED display, while the Galaxy J7 (2016) sports a larger 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display. The J7 seems to have two variants –  SM-J7108 and SM-J7109 – with the only difference between them being the processing chipset. The SM-J7108 (with a black bezel on the front) seems to be equipped with an Exynos 7870 processor, while the SM-J109 seems to use an unknown octa-core processor with four CPU cores clocked at 1.5GHz and the remaining cores clocked at 1.2GHz.

The J7 (2016) features 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with an LED flash, 4G LTE connectivity, a 3,300 mAh battery, and a 7.6mm thin body. The J5 (2016) comes with 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 13-megapixel primary camera, a 5-megapixel secondary camera with an LED flash, and 4G LTE.

Interestingly, both these smartphones seem to have either a laser autofocus unit beside the camera sensor or a loudspeaker grill that’s painted in black. It could also be a heart rate sensor, but we will only come to know after the official announcement of the devices. Both these phones were certified by the Bluetooth SIG last month, and the new Galaxy J7 hit FCC certification a couple of weeks ago that confirmed its 3,330 mAh battery. The battery capacity of the second-generation J5 remains unknown.

Samsung Pay will support ATM deposits in South Korea

Samsung Pay users in South Korea will be able to make ATM deposits using the mobile payments service later this month. They will be able to deposit money at ATM machines in the country starting March 11, the day Samsung releases the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. This feature will enable users to deposit and withdraw money from ATM machines of Woori Bank, Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, Industrial Bank of Korea, and NH Nonghyup Bank. Users just have to place their phones on the machine readers to complete the transaction.

Previously users in South Korea could only use Samsung Pay to withdraw money from Woori Bank ATMs. They will appreciate having this improved functionality which covers ATM networks of some of the major banks in South Korea. Samsung has not confirmed if it’s going to bring this functionality to other markets where Samsung Pay is available, it says that more details about this will be available after March 11.

Samsung’s VR stunt at the Oscars was cancelled at the last minute

For the past few years Samsung has been a major sponsor of the Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, who can forget the infamous Ellen selfie with A-list celebrities that generated a lot of buzz for the Galaxy Note 3. It was a planned promotional activity for Samsung and it paid dividends as that selfie became the most retweeted tweet on Twitter. Samsung only filled the first ad spot at the Oscars this year with which it pushed the new flagship handsets and its virtual reality technology but it turns out that the company had a bigger virtual reality stunt planned for the Oscars this year which was cancelled at the last minute.

Samsung hired YouTube vlogger Casey Neistat to cover the Oscars as part of a promotional activity for the Galaxy S7 and the company’s new Gear 360 camera. Neistat revealed in his vlog today that Samsung really wanted to push virtual reality in a big way at the Oscars. It was initially planned to have Neistat skateboard down the aisle at the Dolby Theater with Samsung’s new 360-degree camera, he would have shot past Leonardo DiCaprio and jumped onto the stage holding the camera during the live broadcast of the proceedings. It would have been an amazing stunt and would have yielded an amazing virtual reality video. Samsung pushed the Academy and the TV team to go ahead with this stunt as everything had already been rehearsed but it was cancelled hours before the broadcast started.

Samsung has just announced the addition of new watch faces meant for the Gear S2 smartwatch. These can be downloaded directly from Gear Apps. These watch faces bring world-renowned character Snoopy to life. However, it might not be meant for everyday usage as it doesn’t bring much to the table apart from visual appeal and a little bit of nostalgia.

Samsung has been actively involved in adding new features to its Tizen-based wearable. The company recently added the ability to view Twitter trends directly from your wearable with the help of a new watch face. Have you tried out the new Snoopy watch faces on your Gear S2? Let us know what you make of it.

[Poll] Which Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge color will you be going with?

Like the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are being offered in four color options. Black, white and gold are making a return, while the rather glaring blue version has been replaced by the galactically more attractive silver model. The black color version of the S7 and S7 edge is much, much closer to actual black than the bluesy Black Sapphire color seen on the S6 and S6 edge, and we think the new handsets look great in the chosen paint jobs.

Black and silver are the colors members of the SamMobile team are pondering as we near market availability of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and we would like to put the question to you. What Galaxy S7 or S7 edge color will you be going with when you purchase either handset? We are certainly bracing ourselves for the possibility of Samsung not offering all options in every market, but there’s no harm in hoping you will be able to pick up one of the company’s new flagships in the color you want.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
