Samsung handed out 2,600 Gear VR units to developers at Facebook’s F8 conference

Samsung’s revealed that it handed out a whopping 2,600 Gear VR units to developers attending Facebook’s F8 conference at Fort Mason in San Francisco yesterday morning. The Virtual Reality headsets were neatly packaged in a Facebook-branded box, which also contained a customized Galaxy smartphone.

It’s not clear what handset was included in the bundle, but seeing as the device is compatible with the Gear VR, it can only really be either the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge or Galaxy Note 5. However, there is always the possibility that the firm has introduced support for a sixth unit.

The smartphones bundled into the developer kit have faced some major software changes, which were pushed to the handsets by way of an over-the-air (OTA) update using the company’s KNOX platform. Thankfully, Samsung wasn’t feeling shy, and was happy to provide details on these alterations in its press release:

  • Developers to have all the tools they need at their fingertips with no additional set-up.
  • The devices to instantly connect to the network with pre-loaded Wi-Fi credentials.
  • Facebook’s logo to automatically appear once the device is turned on.
  • All Facebook apps to be pre-installed and pre-arranged.
