Unity is a popular game development engine that has proven to be instrumental in the advancement of the Tizen app ecosystem. Developers were able to port many of their mobile games for iOS and Android over to Tizen as they were built on the same engine. Samsung has also been promoting Tizen game development in partnership with Unity for the past couple of years.
There has now been a new development on this front. Unity Technologies has confirmed that Unity 2017.2 is going to be the last version with support for Tizen and Samsung’s Smart TV platform.
Unity Support For Tizen
Unity has officially confirmed that it has dropped support for the Tizen and Samsung’s Smart TV platform. Unity 2017.2 is going to be the last version with support for these platforms. Unity promises to provide developers with 12 months of support, including patches and security updates.
What this means is that developers can continue to develop games for Tizen on previous versions of Unity but they won’t be able to take advantage of any of the new features that Unity introduces in future releases of its game development engine.
Unity has said that it’s going to shift its attention to platforms where its community is more active. Samsung’s Gear VR is one of those platforms so we can expect better games for the Gear VR built on Unity in the future.
