May 2020 security update for Galaxy S9/S9+ rolling out worldwide

Samsung is now rolling out the May 2020 Android security update to the international variants of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Identified by build number G96xFXXS9DTD7, the software package already made its way to the majority of Asia but is still largely unavailable in the West, with Germany being the first and – so far – only European country to receive it.

As is usually the case with Android updates coming straight from the Korean manufacturer, owners of unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ models can expect a notification prompting them to download the new firmware version in the coming days. Assuming they haven’t received it already, naturally.

Another minor update for Samsung’s 2018 flagships

Samsung’s 2018 flagships already entered their third year of after-sales support following their jump to Android 10 in February. In other words, the Galaxy S9 series almost certainly won’t be upgraded to Android 11. Be that as it may, Samsung continues to work on optimizing its latest security releases for the said smartphone range and should keep that up until at least next year. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ will also be getting the One UI 2.1 update in the near future.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users who aren’t keen on waiting for the May 2020 security patch to hit their devices can also flash the new firmware manually using a Windows computer. If you happen to be part of that crowd, you can find the latest compatible build in SamMobile’s firmware archive. If you own a carrier-locked version of the Galaxy S9, you’ll have to wait a little while longer before the newest Android security patch becomes available for download on your device.
